Internship Rtl Design Intern information

What types of projects do RTL Design Interns typically work on during their internship?

As an RTL Design Intern, you’ll often assist with designing and verifying digital circuits at the Register Transfer Level, which involves writing and debugging HDL code (such as Verilog or VHDL), running simulations, and supporting the integration of modules into larger systems. Interns usually work on real project tasks alongside experienced design engineers, contributing to blocks or subsystems that may be used in actual chip products. This hands-on experience allows you to develop technical skills, learn industry-standard tools, and gain exposure to the collaborative workflow between design, verification, and validation teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RTL Design Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RTL Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of digital logic design, computer architecture, and proficiency in hardware description languages like Verilog or VHDL, usually supported by coursework in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools (such as ModelSim or Synopsys VCS), version control systems (like Git), and debugging environments is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with senior engineers and interpret design requirements. These skills are crucial for producing accurate, efficient RTL code and contributing effectively to complex hardware design projects.

What does an RTL Design Intern do?

An RTL (Register Transfer Level) Design Intern assists in the hardware design process by writing and verifying digital circuits using hardware description languages like Verilog or VHDL. Their primary role is to help develop, simulate, and debug design blocks that will eventually be implemented on chips such as FPGAs or ASICs. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers, contributing to design documentation, running testbenches, and ensuring designs meet specifications. This internship provides valuable hands-on experience in digital design, verification, and understanding the full hardware development lifecycle.

What is the difference between Internship Rtl Design Intern vs Digital IC Design Intern?

AspectInternship Rtl Design InternDigital IC Design Intern

Work EnvironmentDesign teams, hardware development labsDesign teams, hardware development labs
Industry UsageCommon in semiconductor and electronics companiesCommon in semiconductor and electronics companies
Focus AreaRTL coding, simulation, verificationRTL coding, synthesis, timing analysis

Both roles involve digital design and RTL coding, but the Internship Rtl Design Intern typically focuses on writing and verifying RTL code, while the Digital IC Design Intern may also involve synthesis and timing analysis. They share similar environments and industry usage, making them closely related internship options for aspiring hardware engineers.

Job description

Your New Company!
At Altasciences we all move in unison to assist and work in the discovery, development, and manufacturing of new drug therapies to get them faster to people who need them. No matter your role, we all play an important part and you will have a significant impact on the health and well-being of people across the globe. By living our values of Employee Development, Customer Focus, Quality and Excellence, Respect and Integrity, we look to foster a passionate and collaborative work environment and we are looking for talented and enthusiastic people, like you, to join our growing team! Whether you're a recent college graduate or seeking your next career opportunity, it's time to discover your future at Altasciences.

We are better together and together We Are Altasciences.

About the Role

A small intern team will spend 10 weeks experimenting with how modern AI tooling (LLMs, OCR, and adjacent systems) could move our report authors from blank templates to populated first drafts that humans then review, edit, and finalize.

The project starts from a blank canvas. The team will focus on one line of business and one document type, work directly with report authors to understand the current workflow, and deliver a working prototype plus an honest recommendation on whether to invest further. The project will be shaped to align with the team's strengths and interests - what you see here is the starting point, not the finish line.

What You'll Do Here

  • Interviewing report authors to understand how they actually work - the workflow on paper vs. the workflow in real life

  • Mapping the current authoring process and identifying where the real friction lives

  • Defining what "good" looks like for an AI-generated first draft - and what would make an author trust (or distrust) one

  • Sketching how a human reviewer would interact with AI-drafted content: what to show, what to hide, how edits flow

  • Working closely with the engineering interns so what they build reflects what authors actually need

  • Helping shape the end-of-summer recommendation from the user's point of view

What You'll Need to Succeed

  • This role is more user research than visual design - you'll be defining the problem alongside the team, not styling a finished product.

  • High school seniors through rising college juniors with an interest in design, user research, or how people actually use the tools they're given. You don't need a polished portfolio - but you should be curious about people, comfortable asking questions, and good at noticing the gap between what someone says they do and what they actually do.

  • Excellent communication skills

  • You should apply even if you don't tick every box. If the project sounds exciting and you can point to a time you've tried to understand how someone uses something - a friend, a family member, a stranger, yourself - that's enough to start a conversation.

Altasciences strives to provide a French working environment for its employees in Quebec. Although as part of its francization program has taken all reasonable steps to avoid imposing the above-mentioned requirement. Fluency in English is an essential requirement for the position of Process Innovation - Design Intern including, but not limited to, for the following reasons:

  • The requirement to have study protocols, designs and clinical research documents written and documented in English as required by industry regulatory agencies.

  • The employee communicates frequently with Altasciences employees across Canada and the United States. As such, English is the main language used to correspond between offices.

In Lieu of a Cover Letter

Please choose 2 of the 4 questions below and answer each in 30-60 words.

We're looking for answers that sound like you. Specifics - real people, actual questions, and genuine moments - matter more than polish. The questions themselves are viable parts of your answer; you don't need to repeat them back. Short and honest beats long and impressive.

  • Describe your personal approach to when you do or don't use AI.

  • Describe a system - technical or otherwise - you use to keep yourself organized on a project, and what about it works for you.

  • Describe a problem you noticed outside of school or work and decided to do something about. Focus on what made you notice it, not what you did about it. Include at least one detail that's specific to your situation.

  • What's something you find yourself thinking about that most people you know don't?
