Job description

This position is for a Licensed Practical Nurse whose responsibility is to provide direct nursing activities for patients receiving therapeutic and diagnostic services in Medical Surgical Services, in accordance with accreditation standards, federal, state, and local regulations, organizational and departmental policies and procedures and professional standards.ย  Participates in activities that ensure the safe and efficient provision of Medical Surgical Services to neonate, infant, adolescent, and adult patient populations.ย  Refers unusual clinical problems to the Registered Nurse.ย  Responsible for the supervision of skilled personnel during an assigned shift.ย  The position reports to the Director of Medical Surgical Services.ย 

  1. Attends organizational and departmental orientation upon employment and completes annual update and health requirements thereafter in accordance with timeframes specified by organizational policy.
  2. Demonstrates a working knowledge of and/or location of organizational policies and procedures as well as adheres to them.
  3. Exhibits a working knowledge of information management, confidentiality, patient/residents safety, corporate compliance and infection control.
  4. Possesses knowledge of reporting errors or near misses without fear or blame/punishment for reporting accidents/incidents.ย  Addresses and reports problems as they arise.ย 
  5. Completes required competencies, licensure, certification and registration recertification in a timely manner, as well as participates in continuingย educationย ย 
  6. Arrives to work on time, on scheduled days, during scheduled hours.ย  Maintains flexibility with work schedule in meeting the needs of the department.
  7. Provides age specific care demonstrating knowledge of growth and development, system assessment and developing an interdisciplinary plan of care addressing culture, religion and ethnic preferences.
  8. Attends 75% of mandatory departmental meetings and in-services.
  9. Utilizes equipment and materials in a cost effective manner.
  10. Participates in performance improvement activities.
  11. Serves as a preceptor in orienting and/or training new personnel.
  12. Follows chain of command whenever issues or problems arise which are beyond scope of practice.

  3. ย Re-evaluates patient within timeframe specified by protocol. Communicates changes to Registered Nurse as they are noted.
  4. Utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to plan for patient discharge, beginning with the initial patient contact.
  5. Utilizes an interactive learning process for patientย education.
  6. Documents all nursing actions accurately and as specified by protocol.
  7. Administers medications and solutions in a safe and timely manner.
  8. Demonstrates competencies for all necessary nursing activities during orientation and annually thereafter.

ย  ย  ย  1. Minimum level of Education: Education level equivalent to a licensed practical or vocational nursing diploma preferred.

  1. Formal Training: Clinical competence in nursing preferred.
  1. Licensure, Certifications & Registration: Current license to practice professional nursing in the state of Georgia; BLS certification required; ACLS certification encouraged.
  1. Work Experience: Basic technical nursing skills. Basic cardiac arrhythmia identification skills. Basic computer skills. Minimum three (3) months medical surgical experience required.
