About A Free Bird

A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City. We empower children diagnosed with cancer to explore their artistic passions through music, art, writing, performance, and other creative outlets. Our digital platforms play a critical role in supporting our programs, volunteers, and operations.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Back-End Developer to help build, maintain, and optimize the server-side architecture that powers A Free Bird’s digital systems. This role focuses on application logic, database design, integrations, and performance — ensuring our platforms are secure, scalable, and reliable. You will collaborate with front-end developers, designers, and operations teams in a fully remote environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain server-side applications and APIs
  • Build and optimize database structures and data models (RDBMS)
  • Integrate front-end applications with back-end services
  • Write clean, testable, and well-documented code
  • Perform debugging, testing, and performance optimization
  • Maintain GitHub repositories and technical documentation
  • Support deployment workflows and release processes
  • Collaborate with distributed teams using agile development practices

Skills & Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in back-end or full-stack web development (internships or volunteer experience included)
  • Strong proficiency in Django
  • Solid understanding of databases
  • Experience building and consuming APIs
  • Understanding of MVC architecture, agile methodology, and software lifecycle
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment and communicate clearly

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting nonprofit or mission-driven organizations
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms or deployment pipelines
  • Full-stack experience (front-end knowledge a plus, but not required)

Why Join Us?

  • Work on meaningful, mission-driven technology
  • Gain hands-on experience improving real-world systems
  • Collaborate with a passionate, fully remote team
  • Build portfolio-ready backend projects with real impact
