Job description

Who We Are

At Mission Edge, our mission is to help nonprofits and small businesses maximize their social impact. Our Impact Lab gives underserved small business owners direct, one-on-one access to experienced financial leadership through a ten-week engagement with a Small Business CFO Consultant. We are formally structured as a nonprofit, but we operate like a mission-driven business, because lasting social impact is best sustained by earned revenue, not just donations.

As a remote Small Business CFO Consultant, you can bring senior financial expertise directly to small business owners who need it most, from anywhere in the United States.

Consistently recognized as one of the Best Places to Work in San Diego and in Southern California, Mission Edge is growing its team of Small Business CFO Consultants. Reporting to the Impact Lab Operations Manager, this part-time, hourly role guides small business owners generating $50,000 to $250,000 in annual revenue through a ten-week engagement covering costs, margins, break-even point, cash runway, and a three-year financial plan. Hours run approximately 10 to 40 per month, with a flexible mix of weekday daytime and evening availability based on client schedules.

What We Believe

We enjoy the journey as much as the destination, stay transparent by sharing information early and often, keep an entrepreneurial mindset that never settles for the status quo, lean on our network instead of pretending to have all the answers, and teach by doing, leading by example with our clients and each other.

What You Will Bring

  • Real-world, hands-on CFO or senior financial leadership experience that translates directly to small business finance. Equivalent experience may include professional, volunteer, military, academic, or lived experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the role.

  • Demonstrated ability to explain financial concepts clearly to business owners without a financial background.

  • Advanced Excel skills, including building financial forecasts and models from scratch.

  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish and English; required to support the Spanish-speaking small business owners in this program.

  • Experience managing multiple client or stakeholder relationships at the same time.

Skills You’ll Have

You do not need every item below to be a strong candidate. We encourage you to apply if you meet the requirements above and bring some of the following:

  • Experience advising businesses with annual revenue in the $50,000 to $250,000 range.

  • Background working with entrepreneurs in underserved or historically underrepresented communities.

  • Comfortable with tools such as Monday.com, Basecamp, or Google Workspace, or a willingness to learn them quickly.

  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage a multi-client caseload with competing deadlines and priorities, working autonomously with minimal oversight.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead weekly one-on-one virtual advising sessions with small business owners across a focused 10-week engagement.

  • Assess each client’s financial position and goals, and review their financials to deliver direct, actionable feedback.

  • Build cost of goods sold, expense, margin, break-even, and cash runway models tailored to each business.

  • Develop a three-year financial plan and simple forecasting tools the owner can maintain independently after the engagement ends.

  • Translate complex financial concepts into plain language that non-financial business owners can act on with confidence.

  • Document session notes and outcomes in Monday.com, and attend a mandatory 30-minute weekly team check-in.

  • Offer periodic office hours to program graduates beyond the formal 10-week engagement.

  • Manage a caseload of multiple clients at different stages of their engagement, adjusting pace and approach to each owner’s needs.

What You’ll Get

  • Competitive Compensation: $60 to $75 per hour, commensurate with experience.

Actual compensation may vary based on experience, qualifications, internal equity, geographic location, and business needs. This is a part-time, hourly consulting role; benefits eligibility, if any, will be confirmed during the hiring process.

Work and Life Balance

This role offers a genuinely flexible schedule of approximately 10 to 40 hours per month. We empower our team members to try new things and create their own path to success, balancing autonomy with collaboration and zero micro-management.

What Success Looks Like

  • Clients are raving fans who trust you with their most sensitive financial questions.

  • You recognize where a client’s financial practices can improve, and you are confident sharing and implementing your ideas.

  • You communicate openly and constructively, and you treat “that’s the way we’ve always done it” as a phrase to challenge, not repeat.
