Internship Remote Reference Librarian information

What is a remote reference librarian internship?

A remote reference librarian internship is a temporary training position where interns assist library users with research, information retrieval, and reference services, all conducted online rather than in person. Interns typically work from home or another remote location, utilizing digital tools and library databases to answer patron questions, support academic research, and develop their professional skills. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in library science, information management, or digital reference services, offering valuable hands-on experience in a virtual environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote reference librarian interns, and how can they be overcome?

Remote reference librarian interns may face challenges such as building rapport with patrons virtually, managing time effectively across multiple digital platforms, and staying connected with their supervising librarians and team members. To overcome these challenges, interns should proactively communicate with colleagues, regularly seek feedback, and utilize collaborative tools provided by the library. Establishing a clear routine, participating in virtual meetings, and taking advantage of online training resources can also help remote interns succeed and feel integrated into the library's operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship remote reference librarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Remote Reference Librarian, you need a foundational understanding of information science, research methods, and strong digital literacy, often supported by current enrollment in an MLS/MLIS program or similar qualification. Familiarity with library databases, online cataloging systems, and virtual reference platforms such as LibGuides or chat services is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills help you effectively assist patrons in a remote environment. These abilities are crucial for ensuring patrons receive accurate, timely information and support regardless of location.

Become a Key Player as a Staff Platform Engineer-Platform Integrations

You will be the primary technical authority for integrations that connect the organization's products and external systems, setting integration architecture and API standards that multiple product teams build against. Your work reduces escalation by enabling teams to ship reliably and shapes cross-team technical decisions with measurable impact. You will collaborate closely with product and engineering stakeholders across adjacent teams.

Here's How You'll Make an Impact on the Team
  • Own the reference architecture for the Platform Integrations layer, including API standards, event-driven patterns, shared integration service design, and third-party integration frameworks
  • Lead technical due diligence and design reviews for cross-product and external-partner integration requirements
  • Define and document API contracts, integration patterns, and onboarding standards to enable product teams to build on shared integration infrastructure
  • Drive decisions on integration tooling, frameworks, and platforms in partnership with platform teams
  • Contribute to implementation of integration services, APIs, and shared libraries and participate in high-bar code and design reviews
  • Build and maintain tooling and knowledge (runbooks, onboarding guides, API documentation) to accelerate and standardize integration development
  • Author RFCs and ADRs to document design decisions and participate in architecture review and platform governance processes
  • Mentor senior engineers toward broader technical scope and partner with engineering managers and product leadership to align technical decisions with delivery goals
Here's What You'll Need to Be Successful in This Role
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated technical leadership across multiple teams or product areas
  • Proven ability to make and defend architecture decisions at scale
  • Active daily use of AI-assisted development tools
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience designing and building production-grade integration systems (RESTful APIs, event-driven architectures, enterprise messaging)
  • Experience with API gateway technologies and API lifecycle management (versioning, contracts, deprecation)
  • Strong proficiency in at least one backend language used in integration/platform contexts (Java, Python, C#, or similar)
  • Experience deploying and operating integration workloads on cloud platforms (AWS strongly preferred)
  • Familiarity with event streaming platforms and asynchronous processing patterns
Here's What Else Might Help You Out
  • Experience with enterprise integration patterns and frameworks at scale across multiple engineering teams
  • Prior work in a multi-product fintech or financial services environment with complex integration and regulatory considerations
  • Experience with API management platforms and governance tooling
  • Experience establishing integration standards or governance across multiple engineering teams
Pay Range

$210K plus 5% bonus/year
