  • Review E&M code selection, ICD-10-CM diagnoses, modifiers, medical necessity, and supporting documentation

  • Evaluate whether documentation supports the level and type of service billed

  • Identify undercoding, overcoding, documentation deficiencies, missed coding opportunities, and compliance risks

  • Provide clear, practical, and constructive feedback to physicians and advanced practice providers

  • Conduct individual and group provider education sessions

  • Develop coding guidance, provider education materials, audit summaries, and corrective-action recommendations

  • Create spreadsheets and reports summarizing audit findings and documentation trends

  • Perform follow-up audits to measure provider improvement and continued compliance

  • Track recurring coding and documentation issues across providers and facilities

  • Assist providers, coding staff, billing staff, clinical leadership, and revenue-cycle teams with coding and documentation questions

  • Clarify complex coding discrepancies and recommend appropriate resolutions

  • Perform coding or coding corrections when issues are identified

  • Support timely and accurate billing by resolving coding and documentation issues

  • Help develop and maintain internal coding, auditing, and documentation policies

  • Assist with internal compliance reviews and external audit responses

  • Meet established quality, productivity, and turnaround-time expectations

  • Stay current with CPT, ICD-10-CM, CMS, Medicare, and Office of Inspector General guidance

  • Escalate material coding, documentation, or compliance concerns to leadership

  • Participate in special projects and other responsibilities as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Active Certified Professional Coder certification

  • Experience with physician or professional-fee coding

  • Strong knowledge of E&M coding and documentation guidelines

  • Experience reviewing physician or advanced practice provider documentation

  • Thorough knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, modifiers, medical necessity, and Medicare billing requirements

  • Strong analytical, auditing, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to clearly explain coding and documentation requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to communicate professionally with physicians, nurse practitioners, management, and billing teams

  • Strong spreadsheet, reporting, and computer skills

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a remote environment

  • Strong attention to detail and sound professional judgment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience conducting coding or documentation audits

  • Experience educating physicians or advanced practice providers

  • Skilled nursing facility, nursing home, long-term care, or post-acute coding experience

  • Experience with initial, subsequent, and discharge nursing facility E&M services

  • Medicare Part B professional billing experience

  • Experience in physiatry, rehabilitation, pain management, musculoskeletal care, or a related specialty

  • Certified Professional Medical Auditor certification

  • Certified Documentation Expert–Outpatient certification

  • Certified Coding Specialist–Physician-based certification

  • Certified in Healthcare Compliance certification

  • Registered Health Information Administrator or Registered Health Information Technician credential

  • Associate’s degree or higher

Candidates who do not currently hold a CPMA certification may be encouraged to obtain it after hire.
