What is a remote library and information science internship?

A remote library and information science internship is a temporary, supervised work experience that allows students or recent graduates to gain practical skills in library and information services, all while working from a location outside of a traditional library, typically online. Interns may assist with digital cataloging, information management, research support, and outreach projects for libraries or information centers. These internships provide valuable hands-on experience, networking opportunities, and a chance to apply academic knowledge in a real-world setting, often with flexible hours and from any geographical location.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect during a remote library and information science internship?

As a remote Library & Information Science intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as organizing digital collections, cataloging resources, conducting research to support library initiatives, and assisting with the development of online user guides. You may also participate in virtual team meetings, contribute to digital outreach or social media efforts, and collaborate with librarians and information professionals on ongoing projects. This remote structure encourages self-motivation and effective communication skills while still offering mentorship and regular feedback from supervisors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship remote library and information science?

To thrive as an Internship Remote Library & Information Science, you need foundational knowledge of library science principles, research methods, and information organization, typically gained through current enrollment in or recent completion of a relevant degree program. Familiarity with library management systems (such as Koha or Alma), digital archives, and online research databases is often required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and self-motivation are critical soft skills for effective remote collaboration and independent work. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate information management, smooth digital workflows, and successful support of library users and staff in a remote environment.
