To thrive as an Internship Remote Data Abstractor, you need attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and a foundational understanding of data management, usually supported by coursework in health information, data science, or a related field. Familiarity with data abstraction software, electronic health records (EHR) systems, and spreadsheet tools like Microsoft Excel is typically required. Remote data abstractors often face challenges such as managing time effectively without direct supervision, ensuring data accuracy, and navigating unfamiliar data systems. To overcome these, it's important to establish a structured daily routine, seek regular feedback from supervisors, and make use of training resources provided by the organization. Open communication with team members and proactive problem-solving can also help interns adapt quickly and maintain data quality.

A remote data abstractor internship is a temporary, entry-level position where individuals work remotely to collect, review, and summarize data from various sources, such as medical records, research databases, or business documents. Interns are trained to extract specific information according to established guidelines and enter it into digital systems for analysis or reporting. This role often requires attention to detail, data entry skills, and a basic understanding of the field's terminology. Interns may work for healthcare organizations, research institutions, or companies needing accurate data abstraction for projects. The position is ideal for students or recent graduates seeking hands-on experience in data management while working from home.

Job description

Who We Are

In an increasingly complex world where people are starving for someone they can trust, we stand for something simple: always put the client first. We do well by doing good for those we serve. It’s the ultimate measure. We believe in providing value beyond a doubt and in the notion that time will either expose you or promote you, based on your willingness to embrace change.

We serve financial advisors and investors through three entities, each headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska: Carson Wealth, Carson Coaching and Carson Partners. We provide coaching and partnership services to advisor firms – and straightforward financial advice to the investing public. We all share a common mission to be the most trusted in financial advice.

Who We Want

Carson Group is seeking 3–4 Risk Management Interns to support the buildout and standardization of enterprise risk infrastructure across the firm. This is a high-output, hands-on role - not a shadow experience. Interns will own defined workstreams, engage directly with business leaders, and produce deliverables that are actively used across Legal, Compliance, Cybersecurity, and business operations.

Work will center on enterprise policy and procedure documentation, Risk and Control Matrix development, control gap identification, and risk statement drafting, all within a standardized governance framework. Interns will translate complex business processes into structured, risk-aligned documentation and maintain that work within SharePoint and centralized repositories.

This role is well-suited for structured thinkers who write with precision, thrive in ambiguous environments, and are ready to contribute independently from day one. Ideal candidates are currently pursuing — or have recently completed — a degree in Finance, Economics, Risk Management, Business, MIS, or a related STEM field, and bring strong analytical instincts and a process-oriented mindset.

This position is based here in Omaha at Carson HQ; remote applicants will be considered. This position will target 30-40 hours per week; part-time applicants must be available at least 25 hours per week during regular business hours.

What To Expect

  • Document and standardize policies, procedures, and process flows across business units
  • Develop and enhance Risk and Control Matrices aligned to the enterprise risk register
  • Identify and document policy, procedure, and control gaps across functions
  • Draft and structure risk statements using root-cause methodology
  • Support control design and documentation using a standardized control framework
  • Translate business processes into risk-aligned workflows and structured documentation
  • Support change management and version control for new and update policies
  • Build and maintain documentation within SharePoint and centralized repositories
  • Partner directly with stakeholders across business units, Legal, Compliance, and Cybersecurity
  • Operate independently to gather requirements and produce structured outputs
  • Present findings and recommendations as needed

What You Need

  • Interest in financial services or enterprise risk management preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook required.
  • Exceptional written communication and documentation skills, with a demonstrated ability to organize and present complex information in a clear, structured format required.
  • Strong analytical and process-oriented thinking, with the ability to connect processes, risks, and controls required.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple deliverables simultaneously in a high-volume, fast-paced environment required.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and translate unclear or incomplete information into structured, actionable outputs required.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Finance, Economics, Risk Management, Business, MIS, or related field in progress or anticipated preferred; recent graduates will also be considered.
  • Exposure to risk management, audit, compliance, business operations, or governance concepts preferred.
  • Experience with process mapping tools (e.g., Visio, Draw.io, Lucidchart) preferred.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint or document management systems preferred.
  • Prior internship or project experience involving documentation, analysis, or process improvement preferred.

EEO Statement:

In exchange for your expertise, we offer an hourly wage and a great working environment. This is your chance to play a key role in the continued success of our company. Our culture is fast-paced, collaborative, innovative, and focused on healthy living. Carson strives to promote the health and wellness of its stakeholders by maintaining a tobacco-free workplace.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, age or any other characteristic protected by law.

The total rewards expected for this role include a starting hourly wage between $18/hour-$20/hour.
