SUMMARY

A Mechanical Design Engineer I is responsible for the development and documentation of mechanical designs in a cross-functional engineering team environment.  Provides support for other departments including manufacturing, sales, customer service, and quality.  Products include high-performance electro-mechanical systems and components, integrated structures, and control panels used for aircraft entertainment, navigation, and communication systems.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Creates designs by analyzing product or equipment specifications, performance requirements, and existing manufacturing capabilities.  Performs basic design, fabrication, modification, and evaluation of products by applying engineering principles and established analytical tools.  Develops detailed basic designs by using concepts provided by others. 
  • Research manufacturing or processing techniques, materials, properties, and process advantages and limitations as part of long-range plant and product engineering planning.
  • Conducts basic design and review of analyses and/or tests pertaining to the development of new designs, methods, materials, or processes and completes required documentation by applying engineering principles and company standards, and generating reports, procedures, or change proposals. 
  • Develops acceptance, engineering evaluation, test plans, procedures, and reports for basic designs.  Compiles and analyzes operation, test, and research data in support of establishing performance standards for newly designed or modified equipment or product.
  • Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-weight efficiency, contractual specification requirements, cost-defining recommendations, and change proposals.   
  • For basic designs, prepares or directs preparation of product design data, which includes detailed drawings, assembly drawings, wire diagrams, and installation drawings by coordinating with customers, engineers, designers, and drafters, interpreting customer and functional requirements, or by using computer-aided design tools and following industry drawing standards.  Develop data and make preliminary layouts and documentation in response to customer proposal requests. 
  • Reviews basic drawings and layouts to ensure clarity, completeness, form, fit, function, and conformity to standards, procedures, and specifications.  Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies.  Directs revisions and improvements to other engineers and designers.  Implement revisions and improvements to drawings and layouts. 
  • Communicate with customer to establish understanding of customer’s technical requirements and convey design capabilities or product performance. 
  • Supports preparation of basic technical proposals for customers by reviewing and interpreting specifications and requirements.  Includes providing engineering labor and schedule estimates.  
  • Recommends and incorporates changes to enhance products and processes by applying continuous improvement methodologies.  Leads product and process improvement initiatives. 
  • Enhance technical knowledge by routinely reading technical publications, enrolling in educational courses, and engaging in professional associations.
  • Recommends and participates in organizational improvement initiatives that involve cross-functional team settings and responsibilities.   
  • Provides moderately complex training for team members and/or personnel in other departments.
  • Supports project management personnel in the creation and maintenance of project schedule, resources, and budget, which includes the creation of milestones required to complete assigned projects. 
  • Contributes to team effort in a collaborative and supportive manner.
  • Maintains clean, organized work environment and adheres to all safety standards, procedures, and regulations.
  • Adheres to all factory safety procedures and guidelines.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science in engineering or related field of study, no experience required. 
  • Minimum of four (4)+ years of industry experience in lieu of Bachelor of Science degree will be considered. 

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • None

 

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Conversational in any other language is a plus.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Basic arithmetic: add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Statistics: Interpret and analyze numerical data using statistical methods.
  • Basic algebra: The ability to manipulate symbols and equations to find unknown values, express relationships, and model situations.
  • Basic Geometry: The ability to understand and work with shapes, angles, lines, and planes.

 

JOB SKILLS

  • Familiarity with regulatory certification requirements for aircraft mechanical structures and avionics systems is a plus.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and SharePoint.
  • Experience with ERP systems, SAP preferred.
  • Skills in the use of 2D and/or 3D design software.
  • Knowledge about operating and designing aircraft structures and avionics systems is a plus.
  • Ability to be flexible and function comfortably in a fast-paced, constantly changing, and ambiguous environment while maintaining a positive team environment.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects and 5S-related performance teams.
  • Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions and read blueprints, drawings, and schematics.

  • Reliable and flexible to work additional hours on short notice to complete orders or special projects to meet customer or internal demands.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

As part of their job duties, the employee must sit for lengthy periods while operating a computer. They frequently use their hands to type, handle objects, and communicate verbally. Additionally, they may need to stand, walk, reach, and occasionally lift objects weighing up to twenty (20) pounds. This role requires lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, reaching at or below shoulder level, and keyboarding.
