Job description

Job Overview

We are seeking a hands-on API Architect to lead the API architecture and engineering for an enterprise Azure Data Hub. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, Spring WebFlux, Project Reactor, REST APIs, Azure API Management, and cloud integration.

This is a 60% architecture / 40% hands-on engineering role. You will define API standards and architecture while developing reference implementations that engineering teams can follow.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end API architecture, including service boundaries, API contracts, data models, versioning, error handling, and integration patterns.
  • Design and implement REST APIs using Java, Spring Boot, Spring WebFlux, and Project Reactor.
  • Develop reactive, non-blocking services supporting high-volume data exchange and large file transfers.
  • Design streaming, multipart, chunked, and resumable file transfer solutions.
  • Define and maintain OpenAPI/Swagger specifications and contract-first API development standards.
  • Design synchronous and asynchronous integrations using Azure Service Bus, Event Hubs, and Kafka.
  • Implement and manage APIs using Azure API Management (APIM).
  • Deploy APIs using AKS, Azure App Service, or Azure Container Apps.
  • Integrate APIs with ADLS Gen2 and enterprise data pipelines.
  • Design API security using OAuth2, OIDC, JWT, Entra ID, Managed Identity, RBAC, Key Vault, and mTLS.
  • Establish resilience patterns including backpressure, circuit breakers, retries, idempotency, rate limiting, timeouts, and graceful degradation.
  • Build CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
  • Develop Python-based automation, testing, load-testing, and operational tooling.
  • Implement observability using Azure Monitor, Application Insights, logging, metrics, and distributed tracing.
  • Conduct architecture reviews, code reviews, technical design sessions, and mentor API engineers.
  • Work closely with customer architects, engineers, and system owners to define API contracts and delivery sequencing.
Required Skills
  • 10+ years of API, integration, backend, or software engineering experience.
  • 3+ years of API architecture/design experience at enterprise scale.
  • Strong hands-on Java, Spring Boot, Spring WebFlux, and Project Reactor.
  • Strong understanding of reactive programming, reactive streams, backpressure, and non-blocking I/O.
  • Excellent REST API and OpenAPI design experience.
  • Experience with contract-first development, API versioning, pagination, error handling, and idempotency.
  • Hands-on experience with large file transfer, streaming, multipart/resumable uploads, SFTP, signed URLs, and checksums.
  • Strong Azure experience with Azure API Management, AKS, App Service, or Container Apps.
  • Experience with Entra ID, OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, Managed Identity, RBAC, Key Vault, and Private Endpoints.
  • Experience with Azure Service Bus, Event Hubs, and/or Kafka.
  • Strong SQL and data modeling skills.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, CI/CD, Git, Terraform, and automated testing.
  • Working knowledge of Python for automation and testing.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present and defend architecture decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to Have
  • Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, and ADLS Gen2 experience.
  • Experience with Lakehouse / Medallion Architecture.
  • Azure certifications such as AZ-204 or AZ-305.
  • Financial Services or Insurance industry experience.
  • Experience with GDPR, SOC 2, and PII protection.
  • Experience integrating with Workday or ERP systems.
  • GraphQL, gRPC, or event-streaming API experience.
  • API gateway migration or API estate consolidation experience.
  • Data Mesh, Data Products, and Data Contract experience.
  • Experience working in a consulting or client-embedded environment.
