The hiring range for this position is $40,873.48 (minimum salary) to $56,289.00 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for the WRT I.
The hiring range for this position is $42,942.69 (minimum salary) to $59,138.61 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for the WRT II.
The hiring range for this position is $45,116.68 (minimum salary) to $62,132.53 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for the WRT III.
The hiring range for this position is $47,400.71 (minimum salary) to $65,277.98 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for the WRT IV.
This position is responsible for performing technical duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution and collection system.
The purpose of this position is to perform general maintenance and repair of the city's water distribution and collection system. Successful performance ensures an effective, safe, and efficient operation of the facilities and systems.
Job Responsibilities
Major Duties
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces water and sewer mains, water and sewer taps, and
  • manholes.
  • Sets water meters; pulls old or broken meters; repairs or replaces meters; ensures that water meters are installed, calibrated, and tested correctly; ensures that meters operate properly.
  • Raises large meters above ground to regulate confined space issues.
  • Records testing information, radio-read information, and general meter information.
  • Performs electronic and physical readings of large water meters.
  • Reads maps and drawings to located sewer lines.
  • Constructs catch basins for storm water; performs storm sewer maintenance on all catch basins by removing leaves and trash.
  • Performs infiltration stoppage techniques to prevent excess water from entering manholes and treatment plant.
  • Sprays manhole walls; cleans, grouts, and seals manhole joints; seals manhole walls; raises manhole frame and covers to grade.
  • Flushes or uses hand rod to clear sewer stoppages.
  • Repairs and replaces fire hydrants.
  • Performs simple maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles.

  • Guidelines include city policies and procedures; relevant federal, state and local regulation; standard operating procedures, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience Requirements
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one or two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within twelve months of hire.

Knowledge Requirements
  • Knowledge of the operation of specialized equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution and collection system.
  • Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures, and all applicable city codes and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of lawn maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of lawn equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of tractors, backhoes, sprayers, and trucks.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, and prioritizing work.
  • Skill in performing mathematical computations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color. The work is typically performed at plant and related facilities, or work site. The work is performed in a very noisy place and the employee is exposed to much dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals; contagious or infectious diseases; or the work may be performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather, and may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
