The PPS credential program offers four specializations: School Psychology, School Counseling, School Social Work, and School Speech-Language Pathology. These specializations prepare professionals to work in educational settings, focusing on student mental health, counseling, social services, or speech and language therapy. Each specialization requires specific coursework, supervised fieldwork, and passing relevant exams.

Is it hard to get hired as a school counselor?

Getting hired as a school counselor typically requires relevant education, such as a master's degree in school counseling, and state certification or licensure. Competition can vary by region and school district, but strong interpersonal skills and experience with students improve employment prospects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship PPS Credential candidate, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship PPS (Pupil Personnel Services) Credential candidate, you need a foundational background in counseling, psychology, or social work, typically supported by enrollment in an accredited PPS credential program. Familiarity with student information systems, case management software, and knowledge of state education laws are commonly required. Strong interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and effective communication help you build trust with students, families, and staff. These skills are crucial for supporting student well-being, addressing diverse needs, and ensuring compliance with educational standards.

What is an Internship PPS Credential?

An Internship PPS (Pupil Personnel Services) Credential is a type of preliminary credential in California that allows individuals to work in school settings as counselors, social workers, or psychologists while they complete their credential program. This credential is typically issued to candidates who have already completed some coursework and have been offered a position in a school district. It enables them to gain practical experience under supervision while fulfilling the remaining requirements for a full PPS Credential.

How long does it take to get a pps credential?

In California, obtaining a PPS credential for an internship typically takes several months, depending on the completion of required coursework, background checks, and application processing times. The process includes submitting documentation, passing required exams, and completing any necessary supervised experience, which can vary in duration based on individual circumstances.

What types of projects or responsibilities can I expect during an Internship for a PPS Credential program?

During a PPS Credential internship, you can expect to engage in hands-on experiences such as observing and assisting with student counseling sessions, conducting assessments, developing intervention plans, and participating in school-wide programs. Interns often work closely with credentialed school counselors or psychologists, receiving supervision and feedback to support their professional growth. Additionally, you may attend meetings with parents, teachers, and multidisciplinary teams, giving you exposure to collaborative problem-solving and school-based support systems. These experiences are designed to help you meet the practical requirements for credentialing while developing real-world skills in school settings.

What can you do with a pps credential?

A PPS (Prior Periods of Service) credential in California allows individuals to work as a substitute or intern in certain educational roles, such as teaching or support staff, often requiring completion of specific training and background checks. It enables temporary or part-time employment in educational settings while pursuing full certification or licensure.

Job description

Job Summary
Wheatland Union High School District, in partnership with Plumas Lake Unified School District and Wheatland School District, is seeking passionate and dedicated Mental Health Interns for the 2026-2027 school year. This is a unique, tri-district collaborative internship designed to provide graduate students with rich, hands-on experience in TK-12 school settings across participating districts.
This is a stipend-based position, with compensation ranging from $16,000-$25,000 annually (based on the number of field placement days), paid in two installments throughout the school year. To be eligible, applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited graduate program in one of the following fields: Master of Social Work (MSW), Master's in Counseling (School Counseling or Clinical/Rehabilitation Counseling), School Psychology, or Marriage & Family Therapy (MFT). Interns must commit to working the length of the internship, which may extend beyond their university's required field placement calendar. Interns will be placed at school sites within the three participating districts and will receive both clinical and/or PPS credential supervision to support their licensure and credentialing goals.
This internship offers meaningful experience across individual and group counseling, crisis response, case management, family support, behavioral interventions, and multi-tiered systems of support - all within a collaborative, student-centered environment. We believe in - and live by - our motto: Every day, every child, whatever it takes. If you share that commitment, we invite you to join our team and make a lasting impact on the students and families we serve.
