Job description

Job Title: Electrical Design Engineer IIIJob Description

The Electrical Design Engineer III leads the design of low-voltage electrical power distribution, signal networks, and auxiliary equipment for gas turbine projects. This role focuses on industrial facility power distribution up to 600 VAC and 220 VDC, including systems such as motor control centers, switchgear, low-voltage transformers, DC systems, and batteries. The engineer develops detailed design documentation, ensures compliance with applicable electrical codes and standards, supports manufacturing and commissioning activities, and mentors junior engineers while contributing to continuous improvement of product designs and project execution.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design of electrical power distribution and signal networks, including auxiliary equipment for gas turbine projects, primarily on low-voltage systems (600 V and below).
  • Develop comprehensive electrical design documentation such as single-line diagrams, panelboard schedules, electrical load lists, motor lists, wiring diagrams, control schematics, cable schedules, and termination schedules.
  • Create power system plans, lighting plans, electrical room layouts, elevation drawings, conduit and cable tray arrangements, and hazardous area classifications.
  • Perform engineering calculations for equipment sizing, including breakers, overload devices, and relays, as well as cable, conduit, and equipment spacing, and illumination level calculations.
  • Maintain bills of materials and execute other design duties required by the complexity of each project.
  • Develop and review electrical, control, and instrumentation wiring diagrams and cable lists generated by SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL) or SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI).
  • Prepare purchase specifications for electrical equipment and participate in vendor selection for electrical packages.
  • Generate electrical drawing packages used by engineers, designers, and drafters to document logic, point-to-point wiring, and system interactions.
  • Interpret and design in accordance with electrical code requirements from the authority having jurisdiction over each project’s installation.
  • Investigate, understand, and interpret applicable electrical codes and standards, including NEC/NFPA 70, CEC, IEC, ISA, AGA, and others, and apply them effectively in designs.
  • Meet regularly with vendors to ensure all technical and schedule requirements are understood and met.
  • Interpret and integrate design requirements received from the parent organization or other stakeholders into project designs.
  • Respond to technical inquiries from customers, vendors, and field personnel, providing clear and accurate technical guidance.
  • Use SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL), SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), and SmartPlant 3D (S3D), or comparable database-driven software, to design electrical power and control systems.
  • Apply current working knowledge of electrical and instrumentation design for industrial facilities to deliver robust and compliant solutions.
  • Support projects involving generators rated 150 MVA and above for gas or steam turbines and their auxiliaries; leverage power plant experience where applicable.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and promptly report unsafe activities or conditions.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Contribute to building a positive team spirit and collaborative work environment.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of employees, including engineering, operations, and support functions.
  • Handle various engineering assignments, including rework, in a timely manner to meet schedule deadlines.
  • Follow established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines in daily work activities.
  • Ensure product quality by following standard work and process instructions, and identify any potential risks to product quality.
  • Develop schedules, coordinate, and manage electrical design activities for projects of all sizes with minimal supervision from the project lead.
  • Simplify product designs to improve manufacturability and reduce cost while maintaining product quality and functional requirements.
  • Assist Sales, Marketing, and Development Engineering with projects that enhance existing products and support development of new product lines.
  • Meet schedule requirements for project engineering deliverables and ensure timely completion of design packages.
  • Provide technical support during manufacturing and commissioning of equipment, including resolving design-related issues.
