What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Outdoor Mechanical Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Outdoor Mechanical Engineering Intern, you generally need a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and enrollment in or completion of a relevant engineering degree program. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), basic data collection tools, and safety protocols is typically expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help interns interact effectively with field teams and adjust to changing outdoor conditions. These skills and qualities are critical for contributing to hands-on engineering projects, ensuring safety, and supporting efficient project outcomes in dynamic environments.

What kinds of hands-on projects can I expect to work on during an Outdoor Mechanical Engineering internship?

As an Outdoor Mechanical Engineering intern, you'll likely participate in projects involving field testing, prototype assembly, and equipment analysis in real-world outdoor environments. Typical responsibilities may include assisting with site surveys, collecting performance data from mechanical systems exposed to weather, and collaborating with engineers to troubleshoot and optimize designs. This role often requires teamwork with other interns, engineers, and technicians, providing valuable experience in both technical problem-solving and effective communication. Expect a mix of laboratory work and on-site activities, which offers a comprehensive understanding of how mechanical systems perform outside controlled settings.

What are Internship Outdoor Mechanical Engineering positions?

Internship Outdoor Mechanical Engineering positions are temporary roles for students or recent graduates, where they gain hands-on experience working on mechanical engineering projects in outdoor environments. These internships typically involve tasks such as site inspections, field testing, equipment installation, and collaboration with senior engineers in areas like construction, renewable energy, or transportation. Interns learn to apply classroom knowledge to real-world problems, develop technical and teamwork skills, and gain insight into career paths within the mechanical engineering field. Outdoor internships may also require adaptability to weather conditions and travel to various project sites.

Job description

About Tempo

Located in San Diego, Tempo is pioneering a new class of low-cost thermochemical energy storage systems (TCES) designed to accelerate industrial decarbonization and address long duration energy storage needs for the grid. The company's TCES units store energy both chemically and as heat at very high temperatures that can be discharged continuously or as needed directly into industrial processes or as an energy source for electricity generation. The system can be fast charged when electricity prices are low or during surplus renewables generation and discharged as needed. Tempo is backed by Prelude Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Imperative Ventures, and New System Ventures.
