Senior Software Engineer, Full Stack (API Gateway) (Cloud Operations Resilience Engineering)

We are seeking a Full Stack Software Engineer to join our API Gateway platform team. You will be responsible for the design, deployment, and operational health of our critical API Gateways, which serve as a mission-critical platform for handling all API traffic and driving API strategy at Capital One.

The Cloud Operations Resilience Engineering (CORE) Technology division is responsible for enabling and evolving Capital Oneโ€™s foundational cloud infrastructure layer, including observability, connectivity, resilience and availability.

What Youโ€™ll Do:
  • End-to-End API Management: Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of our API lifecycle, ensuring a seamless experience across our API portal and service ecosystem.
  • Automation & Scalability: Engineer robust Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions and automated CI/CD pipelines to streamline deployments and eliminate manual operational overhead.
  • Operational Excellence: Drive system reliability by leading incident management, defining technical requirements, and monitoring key performance metrics to ensure platform health.
  • Strategy & Architecture: Shape the long-term technical infrastructure roadmap, including vendor selection and architectural standards, to ensure alignment with enterprise product goals.
  • High-Volume Support: Provide dedicated support for our mission-critical API services, including advanced policy creation, proactive troubleshooting, and rapid production issue resolution.
  • Security & Cloud Infrastructure: Oversee scalable cloud-native deployments on AWS and GCP, implementing enterprise-grade security standards (such as OAuth 2.0, mTLS, JWT, and JWKS) to safeguard API traffic.
  • Core Technical Leadership: Utilize your expertise in Java, Python, Kubernetes, and observability tools like Datadog to build, secure, and optimize our foundational API infrastructure.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree
  • At least 3+ years of experience in software engineering (Internship experience does not apply)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience in JavaScript, Java, SQL, Python
  • 3+ years of experience in API Gateway technologies, security and routing configurations
  • 2+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Microsoft Azure, or another cloud service
  • 2+ years of experience in Agile practices
  • Experience leveraging interactive AI tooling to accelerate productivity, utilizing capabilities beyond basic code completion

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
