Job description

Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Virtualization Engineer to support the design, implementation, optimization, and ongoing management of a large-scale enterprise VMware infrastructure environment. This role is ideal for a senior-level infrastructure professional with deep hands-on expertise in VMware technologies, enterprise virtualization, automation, storage, networking, lifecycle management, and performance optimization.

The Virtualization Engineer will serve as a subject matter expert responsible for ensuring the reliability, scalability, security, and performance of critical virtualized infrastructure platforms. This position requires strong technical leadership, excellent troubleshooting ability, and the capacity to work independently while collaborating with cross-functional teams across infrastructure, networking, storage, security, and application support.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, and advanced VMware technologies such as vSAN, NSX-T, VMware Cloud Foundation, VMware Aria Suite, vRealize, and PowerCLI automation. This role will play a key part in supporting enterprise modernization, infrastructure stability, operational efficiency, and secure virtualization practices.

Key Responsibilities

Design, deploy, configure, maintain, and optimize VMware vSphere clusters, ESXi hosts, vCenter Server, and related virtualization infrastructure.

Manage VMware vCenter operations, including templates, host profiles, distributed switches, resource pools, permissions, alarms, and enterprise configuration standards.

Implement and support VMware vSAN environments, including storage policy design, capacity planning, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and health monitoring.

Support VMware NSX-T networking and security components, including distributed networking, firewall rules, segmentation, and micro-segmentation strategies.

Administer VMware Cloud Foundation and related integrated VMware components while ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture and operational standard.

Perform lifecycle management activities using VMware Lifecycle Manager, including patching, upgrades, compliance remediation, firmware coordination, and host baseline management.

Develop automation and orchestration solutions using PowerShell, PowerCLI, VMware Aria Automation, vRealize Orchestrator, and related infrastructure automation tools.

Monitor virtual infrastructure performance, identify issues, conduct root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to improve system stability and availability.

Support security compliance across the virtualized environment, including access control, hardening, audit readiness, vulnerability remediation, and configuration governance.

Collaborate with storage, network, cybersecurity, application, and operations teams to deliver secure, reliable, and scalable infrastructure solutions.

Develop and maintain technical documentation, architectural diagrams, operational procedures, build guides, troubleshooting guides, and disaster recovery runbooks.

Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and assist with knowledge transfer across infrastructure teams.

Participate in production support, incident response, change management, and on-call support rotations as needed.

Required Qualifications

Extensive hands-on experience with VMware vSphere, ESXi, and vCenter in large-scale enterprise environments.

Strong expertise in one or more advanced VMware technologies, including vSAN, NSX-T, VMware Cloud Foundation, or VMware Aria Suite.

Proficiency with PowerShell and PowerCLI for infrastructure automation, reporting, administration, and operational efficiency.

Deep understanding of enterprise compute, storage, networking, virtualization, and data center architecture.

Experience with VMware lifecycle management, including upgrades, patching, compliance, baseline management, and remediation.

Strong experience with capacity planning, performance tuning, infrastructure monitoring, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.

Ability to support high-availability, secure, and mission-critical infrastructure environments.

Strong documentation skills, including experience creating SOPs, technical diagrams, operational guides, and disaster recovery procedures.

Excellent communication, collaboration, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to manage complex infrastructure initiatives independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with VMware Aria / vRealize Automation and Orchestrator.

Experience with enterprise disaster recovery planning, backup integration, and infrastructure resiliency.

Experience supporting government, regulated, or security-focused enterprise environments.

Familiarity with ITIL processes, change management, incident management, and operational governance.

VMware certifications such as VCP-DCV, VCAP, VCP-NV, or VMware Cloud Foundation certifications are highly desirable.

Work Requirements

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week contract position.

The position is hybrid and will initially require 1 day onsite per week in Harrisburg, PA.

Candidate must be comfortable working in an enterprise infrastructure environment and participating in production support as needed.

Enhanced background check is required.
