Fabrication & Stamping Engineer

Location: Greenville, MI

Reports to: Manufacturing Engineering Manager / Operations Manager

Department: Engineering / Manufacturing


Composition Brands, renowned leaders in premium refrigeration and ice products, is seeking a Fabrication & Stamping Engineer to support our manufacturing operations. This role is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of metal fabrication and stamping processes, with a focus on improving safety, quality, productivity, and cost performance.

As a Fabrication & Stamping Engineer, you will work closely with production, quality, maintenance, tooling, and project teams to optimize tooling, dies, equipment, and manufacturing methods. You will help ensure the efficient operation of stamping presses, fabrication equipment, and associated manufacturing processes while driving continuous improvement across the operation.

Position Overview:

The Fabrication & Stamping Engineer is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of metal fabrication and stamping processes. This position supports production operations by optimizing tooling, dies, equipment, and manufacturing methods to improve safety, quality, productivity, and cost performance. The engineer works closely with production, quality, maintenance, tooling, and project teams to ensure efficient operation of stamping presses, fabrication equipment, and associated manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities:

Stamping Operations Support

  • Develop, optimize, and maintain metal stamping processes for progressive, transfer, and single-hit dies.
  • Analyze and improve press utilization, cycle times, and production throughput.
  • Troubleshoot stamping quality issues including burrs, splits, wrinkles, dimensional variation, and material failures.
  • Establish and maintain process parameters for stamping operations.
  • Coordinate die tryouts and production launches for new products.
  • Support transfer of tooling from prototype to full-scale production.
  • Evaluate die performance and recommend design improvements.

Fabrication Process Engineering

  • Support laser cutting, turret punching, press brake, welding, and assembly operations.
  • Develop manufacturing routings, work instructions, and setup documentation.
  • Design and improve fabrication processes to reduce waste and increase efficiency.
  • Optimize tooling, fixtures, and material flow throughout production.
  • Conduct time studies and workflow analyses to improve productivity.

Tooling & Die Management

  • Collaborate with tool and die makers on die design modifications and repairs.
  • Lead die maintenance improvement initiatives.
  • Review tooling designs for manufacturability and production efficiency.
  • Monitor die performance and establish preventive maintenance requirements.
  • Support tooling procurement and capital equipment projects.

Continuous Improvement

  • Lead Lean Manufacturing projects.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for quality and production issues.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce scrap, setup time, downtime, and rework.
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Support Kaizen events and operational excellence initiatives.

Quality Assurance

  • Ensure compliance with customer drawings, specifications, and engineering standards.
  • Review first article inspections and production validation results.
  • Support PPAP, APQP, FMEA, control plans, and process capability studies.
  • Investigate non-conforming products and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with quality personnel to improve first-pass yield.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety standards.
  • Conduct risk assessments for fabrication and stamping equipment.
  • Support machine guarding, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and PPE programs.
  • Participate in safety audits and incident investigations.
  • Promote ergonomic and safe manufacturing practices.


Requirements:

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical field.

Experience: 3-7 years of manufacturing engineering experience in metal stamping and fabrication. Experience with high-volume production environments preferred. Experience supporting progressive and transfer die operations.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes and metal stamping operations and die design principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.
  • Experience with stamping presses ranging from 50-1000+ tons.
  • Knowledge of metal forming, blanking, piercing, bending, and deep drawing processes.
  • Familiarity with welding, laser cutting, CNC machining, and press brake operations.
  • Understanding of SPC, process capability, and statistical analysis.
  • CAD software proficiency (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, or similar).
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems and strong Microsoft Excel data analysis skills.
  • Strong project management, analytical, problem-solving, organizational, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and communicate effectively with production, maintenance, tooling, and management teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Lean Manufacturing Certification.
  • Experience with ISO 9001 standards.
  • Knowledge of automotive, appliance, HVAC, defense, or industrial manufacturing.
  • Experience with servo presses and automated stamping cells.
  • APQP, PPAP, FMEA, and Control Plan experience.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work in both office and manufacturing environments.
  • Frequent walking on the production floor.
  • Ability to inspect equipment and processes in manufacturing areas.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs occasionally.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed shoes, and other plant-required equipment.
  • Regular work around stamping presses, fabrication equipment, automated production cells, tooling maintenance areas, and engineering offices.
