What does an internship mainframe production support role involve?

An Internship Mainframe Production Support role involves assisting in the maintenance and operation of mainframe computer systems, which are critical for large-scale business processes. Interns typically monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and support the resolution of technical problems to ensure the smooth running of business applications. They may also help with system upgrades, backups, and collaborating with senior IT staff to learn best practices. This role provides hands-on experience with enterprise-level IT infrastructure and often requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship mainframe production support, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Mainframe Production Support, you should have a basic understanding of computer science concepts, troubleshooting abilities, and familiarity with mainframe environments, often supported by coursework or relevant internships. Knowledge of tools like IBM z/OS, JCL (Job Control Language), and ticketing systems, as well as exposure to monitoring and batch processing software, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and a willingness to learn help interns collaborate with teams and adapt to dynamic technical challenges. These skills ensure the intern can efficiently support mainframe operations, resolve incidents, and contribute to system reliability in a critical IT infrastructure role.

Job description

We are seeking a CICS System Programmer to administer, support, and optimize enterprise IBM CICS environments. This role focuses on CICS platform stability, availability, performance, configuration, and system-level troubleshooting, rather than application development.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Ensure CICS production and test regions are stable, available, and operating efficiently.
  • Monitor system health, performance, and capacity, and proactively address availability risks.
  • Install, configure, maintain, upgrade, and patch CICS Transaction Server (CICS TS) environments.
  • Manage CICS regions, startup parameters (DFHSIT), resource definitions (RDO), and system configuration settings.
  • Perform CICS version migrations, upgrades, and PTF maintenance.
  • Monitor transaction performance, CPU utilization, storage usage, and system metrics.
  • Troubleshoot performance issues, abends, dumps, logs, and traces to identify root causes and implement fixes.
  • Provide production support and resolve complex CICS system-level incidents.
  • Work with security teams to manage secure access to CICS resources using RACF.
  • Support CICS integration with DB2, MQ, IMS, TCP/IP, and web services.
  • Support CICS environments operating across Sysplex and distributed environments.
  • Maintain accurate system documentation, configuration records, and operational procedures.
  • Follow established ITIL and change-management processes for system changes and production support.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience working in IBM z/OS mainframe environments.
  • Strong hands-on experience with CICS Transaction Server (CICS TS).
  • Experience installing, configuring, maintaining, upgrading, and patching CICS.
  • Experience managing CICS regions, DFHSIT parameters, RDO resource definitions, and startup configurations.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills involving system dumps, logs, traces, abends, and performance issues.
  • Experience with CICS performance monitoring and tuning tools.
  • Strong understanding of mainframe system operations and infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting Sysplex environments.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools such as OMEGAMON, MainView, or TMON.
  • Experience integrating CICS with DB2, MQ, IMS, TCP/IP, and distributed systems.
  • Knowledge of mainframe security and RACF.
  • Automation or scripting experience using REXX, Python, or Shell.
  • Experience supporting large-scale enterprise or financial services environments.
