What You'll Do:

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

The Operations Management Internship provides hands-on, fast-paced experience in the scrap metal recycling business. The goal of the program is to learn key facets of the operation from the ground up and understand what a career in scrap metal recycling and operations leadership could look like after graduation.

Interns learn alongside operations teammates and leaders to build fundamental knowledge of material identification, scrap processing, daily facility operations, supply chain, transportation and logistics, quality control, inventory practices, and equipment maintenance. The internship is designed to strengthen communication, decision-making, relationship-building, adaptability, and problem-solving skills in an industrial environment.

Duties of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Participate in daily safety meetings and learn and model Nucor's "Safety First" culture, including OSHA practices, safety programs, housekeeping, and daily operational standards.
  • Learn scrap metal identification, buying and inspecting scrap, processing, quality control, and inventory practices.
  • Gain exposure to day-to-day operations, transportation and logistics, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Support daily facility operations, including material receiving and inbound and outbound coordination.
  • Interact with teammates, managers, customers, vendors/suppliers, and other business partners to help resolve problems and support the steady delivery of products purchased or sold.
  • Collaborate with operations leaders to understand how work is planned and directed across the organization.
  • Review operational data, identify trends, and recommend proactive improvements to safety, productivity, cost, customer service, or other business situations.
  • Learn how operational decisions and actions help protect company assets and profitability.
  • Complete a summer-long business project and present recommendations to division leadership.
  • Build effective working relationships across departments and participate in team meetings and strategic-planning activities.
  • Expect to travel as necessary between facilities.
  • You will work outside in extreme weather conditions in an industrial environment.
  • Be willing to relocate post-graduation.
What We're Looking For:

Required:

  • Rising junior or senior working toward a bachelor's degree, preferably in Business, Supply Chain, Operations Management, Construction Management, Management, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to adapt to changing assignments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build relationships, collaborate, and work efficiently with team members.
  • Ability to creatively solve problems.

Preferred:

  • Continuous improvement mindset.
  • Safety mindset.
  • Previous internship experience.
  • Previous leadership experience.
