Job description

Manager, Distribution Engineering & Asset Information

At Hydro Ottawa, we empower the lives of the people in the communities we serve.

As the electricity distributor to the Nation's Capital, our work powers the essential activities that make up our lives - at home, at work and at play. And as Ontario's largest municipally-owned producer of green power, we are leading the way to a greener tomorrow.

We are seeking a Manager, Distribution Engineering & Asset Information, a change champion and innovative leader ready to embrace the opportunity to guide and mentor others, and enable them to do their best work. And in doing so, to leave a legacy.

Are you ready to make a difference in our community?

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director, Distribution Engineering & Asset Management, the Manager, Distribution Engineering & Asset Information drives the near-to-mid-term engineering performance, customer connection execution, and foundational data integrity of Hydro Ottawa's distribution system. Leading a multidisciplinary team, this role serves as the primary custodian of Hydro Ottawa's Geographic Information System (GIS) data and its operational performance frameworks. By bridging advanced engineering analytics-such as Distributed Energy Resources (DER) integration, connection impact assessments, and power quality analytics-with robust GIS asset records and data governance, the Manager, Distribution Engineering & Asset Information ensures the grid remains resilient, compliant, and structurally optimized. Crucially, this role acts as an operational partner to the long-term planning team, translating day-to-day distribution system dynamics and asset data into the validated baseline models required to fuel Hydro Ottawa's strategic investment plans.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a multidisciplinary team of supervisors, professional engineers, and technical specialists, establishing departmental goals, optimizing workload distribution, and conducting performance reviews to drive a high-performance operational and data-governance culture.
  • Hold accountability for the integrity and maintenance of Hydro Ottawa's GIS data, governing record-management frameworks, GIS/CAD documentation standards, and network connectivity models to support safe grid management and corporate application interoperability.
  • Spearhead the execution of Connection Impact Assessments, load assessments, and localized capacity evaluations to safely and efficiently integrate new customer loads and DERs
  • Guide technical staff through system performance analysis and root-cause investigations, ensuring findings are translated into actionable grid improvements.
  • Govern the engineering processes utilized for short-circuit calculations, protection coordination, and load flow models.
  • Oversee validated engineering data, reliability risk assessments, and short-circuit models to support the long-term development, defense, and maintenance of the Distribution System Plan and Ontario Energy Board regulatory filings.
  • Apply the corporate Value Framework and scoring methodologies to objectively prioritize localized, reliability-driven capital projects based on their capacity to enable immediate growth and mitigate system risks.
  • Develop, defend, and strategically manage the department's annual operational and maintenance budget, optimizing resource allocation across engineering analysis and technical GIS records workflows.
  • Champion the Engineering Development Program within the department, actively guiding the mentorship, technical progression, and professional licensure of Engineer Interns to secure the engineering talent pipeline.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison and escalation point for external developers, electrical contractors, and cross-functional working groups to align customer interconnection timelines with Hydro Ottawa's capacity limits.
  • Actively participate in the company's Business Continuity Plan, On-Call programs, and the Electricity Emergency Response Program.
  • Formulate and deliver comprehensive technical presentations and engineering reports to departmental decision-makers, senior leadership, and diverse external stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university
  • Professional Engineer licensed in the Province of Ontario
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a leadership role
  • Experience in an electric utility engineering environment considered an asset
  • Knowledge of ISO 55000 Asset Management considered an asset
  • Strong computer skills; proficient in the use of office productivity and collaboration tools, preferably Google Workspace
  • English essential, both oral and written; Bilingual (English/French) considered an asset
