What does an internship Linux driver developer do?

An Internship Linux Driver Developer assists in designing, developing, and testing device drivers that enable hardware components to communicate with the Linux operating system. Interns in this role typically work under the guidance of experienced engineers, learning how to write kernel-level code and debug driver issues. Their tasks may include modifying existing drivers, contributing to open-source projects, and documenting their work. This position offers valuable hands-on experience for students interested in system-level programming and open-source software development.

What are some common challenges faced by interns working as Linux driver developers, and how can they overcome them?

Interns in Linux driver development often encounter challenges such as understanding complex kernel architecture, debugging at the hardware-software interface, and keeping up with rigorous code review standards. To overcome these, it's helpful to thoroughly study kernel documentation, actively engage with mentors and team members, and practice debugging with available tools like printk and kernel debuggers. Collaborating closely with experienced developers and participating in code reviews can also accelerate learning and help interns quickly adapt to the team's workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship Linux driver developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Linux Driver Developer, you need a solid understanding of C programming, operating systems concepts, and basic computer architecture, often gained through coursework or personal projects. Familiarity with Linux kernel development tools, source control systems like Git, and debuggers such as GDB is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly will help you stand out. These skills are critical for efficiently developing, debugging, and maintaining reliable Linux drivers within collaborative engineering environments.

Job#: 3046574
Job Description:
Sr. Linux Developer
Location: Bridgeton, Missouri (On-site)
Role Overview
This role is for an experienced Sr. Linux Developer to support the migration of a Windows-based system to a dedicated Linux desktop environment for an IoT platform. The position will involve a blend of design and hands-on implementation (~40% design/engineering, 60% hands-on). The ideal candidate is an independent self-starter who can navigate ambiguity and drive technical direction with minimal guidance.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, planning, and execution of the migration from a Windows-based system to a Linux-only platform, including host OS conversion and application porting.
  • Analyze existing Windows application dependencies, services, and configurations to inform a comprehensive Linux migration strategy.
  • Develop and implement strategies for system design, OS hardening, security lockdown, and software updates in a Linux environment.
  • Collaborate with development and operations teams to ensure functional parity and system requirements are met.
  • Identify and resolve compatibility issues, driver conflicts, and other platform-specific blockers during the migration process.
  • Ensure the new OS configuration is hardened and securely configured for distribution.
Required Qualifications
Education: A Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or an equivalent field is a firm requirement.
Experience: A minimum of 10 years of software development experience is required. Candidates must have a proven track record of planning and executing full Windows-to-Linux OS and application migrations in production environments.
Technical Skills:
  • Deep expertise in Linux distributions (Ubuntu or Debian-based systems), including system hardening, package management, and configuration.
  • Proficiency in Linux scripting (Bash) and software development in C# and C/C++.
  • Experience porting or rewriting Windows-native code to Linux-compatible equivalents.
  • Ability to design time-sensitive, high-availability solutions with high attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with cloud environments (Azure preferred), IoT concepts, and containers.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AI-assisted coding tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or similar.
  • Understanding of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA).
  • Experience deploying and managing Linux-based workloads on cloud platforms like AWS or Azure.
  • Knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker, Podman, or Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Azure IoT solutions.
  • Familiarity with web technologies like HTML, CSS, Blazor, or Razor for UI applications.
  • Experience with Git-based version control (GitLab, GitHub, Bitbucket) and modern IDEs (Visual Studio, VS Code, JetBrains).
