Internship Linux Automation information

What is an internship in Linux automation?

An Internship in Linux Automation is a temporary, hands-on position for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in automating tasks and processes on Linux-based systems. Interns typically work with scripting languages like Bash or Python, and tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or Jenkins, to streamline system administration, deployments, and maintenance. This role is ideal for those interested in DevOps, system administration, and IT automation, providing valuable exposure to real-world projects and professional development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in Linux automation?

To thrive in an Internship Linux Automation role, you need a solid understanding of Linux operating systems, basic scripting (such as Bash or Python), and foundational knowledge of IT concepts, often supported by coursework or relevant certifications. Familiarity with automation tools like Ansible, Jenkins, or Puppet, as well as version control systems like Git, is typically expected. Problem-solving ability, willingness to learn, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for success in this position. These skills and qualities are vital for efficiently automating processes, minimizing human error, and contributing to collaborative technical teams.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a Linux automation internship?

As a Linux Automation intern, you'll likely be involved in tasks such as writing and testing automation scripts using tools like Bash, Python, or Ansible to streamline system administration processes. Common projects include configuring servers, automating deployments, monitoring system performance, and supporting the development of continuous integration pipelines. You'll often collaborate with experienced system administrators and DevOps engineers, gaining hands-on experience in troubleshooting, version control, and documentation. This role offers a strong foundation for a future career in systems engineering or DevOps.

Job description

Job Summary:
Mesh Optical Technologies is focused on integrating optical technology into advanced systems. They are seeking a Software Integration & Test Engineer to develop and maintain software for automating production lines and testing infrastructure, ensuring reliability and observability in manufacturing processes.
Responsibilities:
• Own the software that automates production lines and controls hardware interfaces between factory tools, stations, instruments, and workflows
• Own the software that automates end-of-line production test systems and development lab test environments, ensuring deterministic execution and reliable results at throughput
• Develop and maintain test automation frameworks used for qualification, validation, and manufacturing, including instrument control, sequencing, and pass/fail determination
• Build and maintain data acquisition pipelines for test results, process logs, and system metrics, ensuring production data is captured, stored, and accessible for analysis
• Implement health monitoring, fault detection, and alerting across manufacturing and test software systems
• Support root-cause analysis for line interruptions, process excursions, test escapes, and automation failures
• Work closely with process and manufacturing engineering to ensure every process parameter is fully observable, controllable, and traceable across the line
• Support CI-driven test and integration environments that validate hardware, firmware, and software changes prior to production deployment
• Extend automation and control systems to support new product introductions, process changes, and production ramps
• Interface with mechanical, electrical, optical, and manufacturing engineering teams to resolve integration issues that span hardware and software boundaries
Qualifications:
Required:
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related discipline
• 1+ years of hands-on software development experience (internships, co-ops, and substantive project experience qualify)
• Strong proficiency in Python, with experience writing production-quality code
• Experience developing and operating software in Linux environments
• Familiarity with CI systems, automated testing pipelines, and deployment workflows
• Demonstrated engineering intuition, critical thinking, and comfort with ambiguity
• Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed
Preferred:
• Experience interfacing software with manufacturing equipment, instrumentation, or controls systems (e.g., instrument control via GPIB, USB, serial, or Ethernet)
• Strong proficiency in C or C++ in addition to Python
• Strong understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, serial protocols, device communication)
• Experience with data acquisition, time-series data, or production database systems
• Experience designing software systems for observability, fault tolerance, and long-term maintainability
• Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing, test automation frameworks, or automated validation systems
• Background in hardware-centric or high-volume manufacturing environments
• Experience with containerization, infrastructure-as-code, or deployment automation
• Familiarity with MES systems, production traceability, or factory data infrastructure
• Experience with version control (Git) and collaborative software development workflows
