What You Will Do
The Bioscience Division is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic undergraduate intern candidate interested in performing research within the facets of Genomics & Bio-analytics, Microbial & Biome Sciences, and Biochemistry & Biotechnology. The successful candidate will work with a team of scientists, technicians and students on a number of different projects ranging from exposure science and bio sample analysis, including method development, data acquisition, and data processing. The student will be expected to contribute to different projects as need arises. The ideal student must be meticulous in their work, self-starting, independent, and able to communicate in a professional manner. Depending on the performance of the student and funding availability, there are opportunities to extend the appointment by transitioning to other types of LANL positions or continuing education.
Depending on your skillset, this position will fulfil a role in one of the three groups within the Bioscience Division: B-GEN, B-IOME, or B-TEK. You will be required to attend group meetings. Responsibilities include conducting research and reporting results back to your team and mentors. Furthermore, on-the-job training and opportunities will arise to craft peer-reviewed publications and assist in grant proposals. In addition, the student is encouraged to attend seminars and other LANL functions to expand their knowledge base and broaden interests. The student will also have the opportunity to participate in networking and social events.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • General background in biology, chemistry, or analytical sciences.
  • Demonstrated experience with either Genomics & Bio-analytics, Microbial & Biome Sciences, or Biochemistry & Biotechnology.
  • Familiarity with good laboratory practices and experiment design.
  • Demonstrated competency with computers and software applications for word processing, data processing, and data visualization.
  • Ability to maintain and record work performed, data obtained, as well as write and follow detailed protocols.
  • Ability to understand and present research results clearly and succinctly in both written and oral formats.
  • Ability to comfortably work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage time and see tasks to completion.

Education/Experience: Currently admitted or actively enrolled in an undergraduate degree awarding institution.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Desire to report work in peer-reviewed publications and assist in the grant proposal process.
  • Experience with the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various instrumentation.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
