Job description

We're looking for a motivated Junior Network Engineer to join our IT team and support the design, maintenance, and troubleshooting of our network infrastructure across IMTT's corporate offices and terminal environments. This early-career engineering role provides hands-on operational support, troubleshooting, and project participation under the guidance of senior engineers. It is designed for candidates seeking to deepen their technical skills while supporting a mission-critical, multi-site industrial and enterprise network.
Responsibilities
  • Install, configure, and maintain switches, routers, firewalls, wireless systems, and related network hardware.
  • Troubleshoot Layer 1-3 issues and support end users, field technicians, and the IT Service Desk.
  • Monitor and maintain multi-site LAN/WAN connectivity for corporate and terminal operations.
  • Perform routine maintenance including upgrades, firmware updates, patching, and equipment replacement.
  • Assist senior engineers with escalated issues and participate in the on-call rotation for after-hours support.
  • Work closely with senior engineers on network upgrades and projects.
  • Follow the lead of the senior network engineer and contribute to success of IMTT's network.
  • Assist senior team members with network expansion, site refresh, resiliency improvements, and infrastructure modernization projects.
  • Prepare technical documentation: diagrams, configuration templates, implementation plans, and testing/rollback steps.
  • Support the rollout of new network technologies, including testing, staging, deployment, and validation.
  • Maintain up-to-date network documentation including topologies, configuration logs, SOPs, and support guides.
  • Follow IMTT change management, safety, and operational procedures to ensure reliable and compliant network operations.
  • Partner with Systems Operations, Cybersecurity, and IT Service Desk teams to deliver stable and secure network services.
  • Provide guidance to Tier I/II staff on common network issues and best practices.
  • Communicate clearly with terminal personnel regarding outages, planned work, and troubleshooting steps.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree with major in Information Technology preferred
  • 2-4 years hands-on experience supporting enterprise networks.
  • Experience with common networking technologies (switching, routing, VLANs, ACLS, STP, NAT, DHCP, DNS).
  • Familiarity with enterprise-class equipment such as Cisco, Meraki, Juniper, Aruba, and various vendors.
  • Experience with network monitoring and logging platforms such as SolarWinds, Meraki Dashboard, and Panorama.

Skills and Abilities
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to create, read and interpret network diagrams and packet captures.
  • Excellent communication and customer-service skills within the team environment.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) required or must be obtained within the HR-approved onboarding timeframe.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to IMTT terminals nationwide. Must maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.

Hours of Work
  • Typical hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at our New Orleans Headquarters.
  • This position requires overtime and occasional weekend work as job duties demand.
  • Occasional travel may be necessary, sometimes with little or no advance notice. Travel to IMTT terminals is required, including out-of-state travel.
  • Participation in the Network Engineering on-call rotation is required.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
  • When working inside a terminal, use of PPE (e.g., hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, FR clothing, hearing protection) is mandatory per site requirements.
  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. Fieldwork may involve walking, standing, climbing stairs, bending, lifting equipment up to 25 pounds, and exposure to outdoor weather.
  • There may be times when working from home is required, so the technician needs to have appropriate availability to high-speed internet at all times.

This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of the work being performed. This is not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities. The company reserves the right to amend and change responsibilities to meet business and organizational needs as necessary with or without notice.
