Major Functions
The County of Volusia is seeking an Intern for the Emergency Management Division. This is a temporary (20 hours per week) position located in Daytona Beach, Florida and is responsible for reviewing, designing and developing numerous and diverse projects, studies and objectives such as emergency operational plans, assisting the county and its residents in mitigating against, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from disasters.
NOTE:
  • This position is posted on a continuous basis and candidates that apply could be selected for fall/spring/summer based on the time of year.
  • This is an unpaid internship for college credit only, and if selected, the interns must provide information from their school.
  • This is NOT a virtual internship, this IS a in-person internship.

* Temporary positions do not receive County benefits.
Illustrative Duties
(NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.)
  • Reviews Health Care Facility emergency operations plans.
  • Designs and facilitate tabletop and operational exercises.
  • Develops and deliver public outreach presentations.
  • Assists county-wide stakeholders in developing emergency operations plans and continuity of operations plans.
  • Assists with the Community Organizations Active in Disasters.
  • Provides outreach and emergency preparedness assistance to private schools.
  • May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
To be eligible for a County of Volusia internship, the ideal intern must:
  • Be enrolled in an accredited college or university as a:
    • Full-Time Undergraduate Student (Fall/Spring - 12 Credit Hours; Summer - 6 Credit Hours), or
    • Full-Time Graduate Student (Fall/Spring - 9 Credit Hours; Summer - 6 Credit Hours);
  • Be currently seeking a degree in an area of study related to the internship position;
  • Be able to work four (4) to six (6) hours per day, three (3) times per week, for at least twelve (12) weeks during the assigned internship; and,
  • Undergraduates must maintain a 2.8 GPA or higher on a 4.0 grade scale; graduate students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of hire.

The preferred candidate having met the minimum requirements, will be enrolled in one of the following degree programs:
Political Science, Homeland Security, Public Administration, Public Management, Supervision and Management, International Studies, Emergency Management, Graphic Design, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
