Job description

Director of Interior Design

STV is seeking a Director of Interior Design to lead and elevate our interior design practice in Boston. This is a senior design, delivery, and practice leadership role for an accomplished interior designer who can establish a compelling creative vision and lead teams in carrying that vision through coordinated documentation, construction administration, and project completion. The Director will develop staff, strengthen project-delivery standards, build trusted client relationships, and help grow STV's interior design practice in Boston while contributing to its continued development across the firm.

Responsibilities
  • Provide creative and technical leadership for STV's interior design practice, establishing design direction and quality expectations and maintaining design intent from initial concept through construction completion.
  • Lead interior design projects throughout the full project lifecycle, including programming, space planning, concept development, design development, construction documentation, bidding, construction administration, and closeout.
  • Direct the preparation and review of complete, coordinated, and constructible interior design documents, including drawings, schedules, details, specifications, and FF&E information. Ensure that deliverables communicate the approved design intent, fulfill the contracted scope, and meet project and firm quality standards.
  • Lead coordination with architects, engineers, consultants, manufacturers, vendors, and contractors to integrate interior design requirements into the overall project. Establish appropriate quality reviews and ensure that coordination issues and review comments are resolved before issuance.
  • Lead or provide senior oversight of bidding, construction administration, field observations, and closeout. Ensure that construction-phase decisions respond appropriately to contractual, cost, schedule, and constructability requirements while maintaining the approved design intent.
  • Lead project teams by establishing clear work plans, responsibilities, deliverables, coordination expectations, and review milestones. Provide active direction, mentorship, professional development, and career guidance while holding teams accountable for design quality and successful project delivery.
  • Work with project leadership to align interior design scope, staffing, schedule, fee, and quality expectations and to identify potential delivery risks early.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients and lead design workshops, presentations, and key project decisions. Support practice growth through client relationship development, pursuit strategy, proposals, interviews, and appropriate industry engagement.
  • Strengthen interior design standards, workflows, quality practices, and lessons learned in collaboration with STV's architecture, engineering, technical, BIM, and project-management leadership.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, or a related field.
  • 15 or more years of professional interior design experience, including substantial experience leading design teams and complex building projects through construction completion.
  • NCIDQ certification required.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating design excellence, technical resolution, and successful client and constructed outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience leading projects through programming, design development, construction documentation, bidding, construction administration, and closeout.
  • Strong knowledge of interior construction, detailing, material performance, specifications, furniture systems, accessibility, life safety, applicable building codes, and coordination with architectural and engineering systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and direct project teams, establish documentation and review expectations, lead multidisciplinary coordination, and deliver work consistent with established scope, schedule, fee, and quality requirements.
  • Proficiency in Revit and familiarity with AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and commonly used visualization and presentation tools.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate design direction and project requirements clearly to clients, staff, consultants, contractors, and firm leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience in client relationship management, proposals, interviews, and business development.
  • Ability to lead multiple projects, teams, and priorities within a collaborative, multidisciplinary practice.
Preferred Qualifications
  • LEED Accredited Professional, WELL Accredited Professional, EDAC certification, architectural licensure, or another relevant professional credential.
  • Experience with healthcare, higher education, workplace, science and technology, civic, or public-sector projects.
  • Experience developing or improving interior design standards, documentation practices, quality-control processes, Revit workflows, or staff training programs.
  • Experience representing a design practice through professional organizations, publications, speaking engagements, or other industry involvement.
