Job description

Job Description Summary

The Lab Medical Tech is responsible for Performs and coordinating a range of complex technical laboratory procedures to accurately analyze specimens and generate critical data used in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of diseases. Ensures adherence to established protocols and quality standards while maintaining laboratory equipment and documentation. Collaborates with healthcare professionals to support patient care and contributes to continuous improvement initiatives.

Monday-Thursday 7:45am-5:15pm & Fridays 8am-12pm

(With a rotation of short days on Mondays coming in at 1:00pm)

Responsibilities
Coordinate and perform complex technical laboratory procedures, ensuring accurate execution and interpretation of test results to support clinical diagnosis and treatment. Document findings meticulously for review by laboratory management and healthcare providers.
Conduct specimen collection as required, including venipuncture and skin puncture, while ensuring strict adherence to patient identification, specimen labeling, and collection verification protocols.
Guide proper collection and preservation techniques for various specimen types such as urine, sputum, stool, and others.
Maintain and calibrate laboratory instruments and equipment, ensuring optimal functionality through routine setup, cleaning, preventive maintenance, and sterility testing in compliance with regulatory standards.
Adhere rigorously to laboratory safety policies, OSHA regulations, and infection control protocols to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
Oversee the preparation, quality assurance, and proper handling of quality control materials, reagents, chemicals, and solutions essential for laboratory testing accuracy.
Analyze laboratory data critically, preparing comprehensive reports that assess accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and identify trends or anomalies, providing actionable recommendations.
Contribute to the development, validation, and implementation of new laboratory procedures and testing methodologies to enhance diagnostic capabilities.
Provide expert technical guidance, training, and mentorship to students, interns, residents, and laboratory staff, including organizing educational rotations and competency assessments.
Support clinical evaluation initiatives and participate actively in personnel management activities such as hiring, performance evaluations, promotions, and scheduling.
Monitor and enforce compliance with Quality Control (QC), Quality Assurance (QA), safety standards, and inspection protocols to meet internal policies and external regulatory requirements.
Manage inventory levels of laboratory supplies and equipment, ensuring availability and proper maintenance to support uninterrupted laboratory operations.
Assess workflow and staffing needs continuously, reallocating resources as necessary to maintain efficiency and meet workload demands, with follow-up to ensure task completion.
Oversee staff competency testing, facilitate ongoing education, and ensure adherence to mandatory policy and procedural updates.
Utilize laboratory information systems (LIS) and related software proficiently to manage patient data, test orders, and results reporting.
Communicate professionally and empathetically with patients, families, and healthcare personnel to obtain necessary information, clarify procedures, and provide status updates.
Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to address inquiries and provide detailed information regarding laboratory results.
Coordinate laboratory inspection processes, liaising with regulatory inspectors to ensure compliance and address any findings.
Apply advanced problem-solving skills to troubleshoot technical issues, verify specimen quality, interpret complex test results, and provide consultative support.
Assist leadership with special projects and initiatives as required to support laboratory operations and continuous improvement.
Demonstrate excellent guest service to internal team members and patients.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in medical technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related scientific field is required.
5+ years of experience in laboratory services gained through clinical rotations, internships, or practicum during academic training in Medical Technology or related fields is highly valued.
Alternatively, an equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and hands-on laboratory experience may be considered.
Demonstrated proficiency and dexterity in performing complex laboratory procedures and technical tasks with precision and accuracy.
Strong knowledge of laboratory principles, techniques, instrumentation, and quality control practices.
Proven ability to adhere strictly to regulatory standards, laboratory safety protocols, and infection control guidelines.
Exceptional attention to detail to ensure accuracy in specimen handling, testing, and data recording.
Strong organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload efficiently.
Excellent communication skills to interact professionally with patients, healthcare providers, and laboratory personnel.
Commitment to continuous learning and professional development to stay current with advancements in laboratory technology and practices.
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
