What does an internship infrastructure engineer do?

An Internship Infrastructure Engineer assists in designing, implementing, and maintaining the IT infrastructure of an organization. This role typically involves working with systems, networks, and cloud platforms to ensure they run efficiently and securely. Interns may help with tasks such as server management, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and supporting the deployment of new technologies. The internship provides hands-on experience in real-world IT environments and helps develop technical and problem-solving skills.

What types of projects does an internship infrastructure engineer typically work on, and how do these projects contribute to the overall IT operations?

Internship Infrastructure Engineers often assist with a range of projects such as setting up server environments, monitoring network performance, automating deployment processes, and troubleshooting connectivity issues. These projects are essential for maintaining the reliability and security of an organization's IT infrastructure. Interns usually work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and best practices. This collaborative environment helps interns develop technical skills and understand how their contributions support the larger goals of IT operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship infrastructure engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Infrastructure Engineer, you need a foundational understanding of networking, operating systems, and computer hardware, typically supported by coursework or a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Linux, Windows Server, cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), and basic scripting languages is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for supporting and maintaining reliable IT infrastructure while adapting quickly to evolving technologies in a collaborative environment.

Job description

Here at Humanoid, we believe in a future where robots amplify human potential. Thatโ€™s why weโ€™ve set out on a mission to build the worldโ€™s most capable, commerciallyโ€‘scalable, and safe humanoid robots. Weโ€™re bringing that mission to life with HMNDโ€‘01 Alpha - our rapidly developed humanoid platform now running in real industrial pilots - and weโ€™re growing the team to take it even further.

About the Role

Weโ€™re hiring a Software Engineer to join our Platform Infrastructure team in San Diego. Youโ€™ll be paired with a senior engineer and embedded in one of three critical workstreamsโ€”cloud control plane, manufacturing software, or device identity and securityโ€”that together form the backbone of how we build, provision, deploy, and manage our robots at scale.

You will have the opportunity to contribute across three interconnected areas:

  • Cloud Control Plane & On-Robot Software โ€” The services and daemons that provision devices, distribute OTA updates, publish telemetry, and keep each robot's state converged with what the cloud expects. This spans backend services on AWS (Terraform, ECS, Postgres, S3) and the onโ€‘robot clients that make each device a selfโ€‘updating, observable member of the fleet.

  • Secure Manufacturing & Factory Flow โ€” The software pipeline that takes a bare board in a contract manufacturer's facility and turns it into a productionโ€‘ready device: provisioning stations, calibration routines, endโ€‘ofโ€‘line test automation, MES integration, and manufacturing traceability.

  • Device Identity & Security โ€” The cryptographic chain of trust from secure boot through disk encryption and device attestation to cloud enrollment. Key management infrastructure, certificate lifecycles, and the tooling that ensures only trusted software runs on trusted hardware.

When you join, youโ€™ll be matched to one of these three workstreams based on your background and team needs โ€” your hiring process will reflect that alignment.

This is an earlyโ€‘career role designed for someone who is curious, technically sharp, and eager to learn. Much of what youโ€™ll work onโ€”from secure boot pipelines to fleetโ€‘scale cloud infrastructureโ€”isnโ€™t taught in a classroom. Weโ€™re looking for the right attitude and aptitude, and weโ€™ll invest in developing you into a world class platform engineer.

What Youโ€™ll Do

Our platform infrastructure spans from the factory floor to the cloud and everything running on the robot in between.

  • Build and ship software โ€” Write production-quality code that contributes to our platform infrastructure, from backend services and automation tooling to provisioning and test systems.

  • Learn alongside experts โ€” Pair directly with a senior engineer who will mentor you in your focus area while giving you real ownership of deliverables.

  • Collaborate across a global team โ€” Work daily with firmware, applications, cloud, manufacturing, systems, and operations team members across the local San Diego office and global offices in London, Boston, and Vancouver.

  • Embrace agentic development workflows โ€” Use modern AIโ€‘assisted coding tools and practices we expect everyone on the team to leverage these to move faster with higher quality.

  • Own your growth โ€” As the team scales and business needs evolve, your focus within the platform infrastructure workstream will grow with you.

What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • Strong technical communication โ€” You can explain your thought process clearly to a technical teammate, in writing and in person.

  • Receptive to feedback โ€” You have a demonstrated history of receiving and responding to feedback constructively.

  • Leans into hard problems โ€” You donโ€™t shy away from unfamiliar territory; you dig in and figure it out.

  • Humble โ€” You are able to put your own ideas aside, listen, and genuinely consider othersโ€™ perspectives.

  • Collaborative โ€” You see knowledge as something to share, not withhold, in order to solve problems faster, together.

  • Responsible โ€” You strive to understand the โ€œwhyโ€ of your work and have the passion and ambition to push to get it over the line.

  • Technically grounded โ€” You have a solid foundation in CS fundamentals and can write clean, readable code even if youโ€™re still building experience in our specific stack.

Experience:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • 0โ€“3 years of professional experience (internships and research count).

  • Proficiency in at least one systems or backend language (Python, C/C++, TypeScript, or Rust). Specific technical requirements will vary by workstream โ€” details will be shared during the hiring process.

  • Proficiency in AI tools for research, iteration, feedback, development and test.

  • Comfort working in Linux environments.

  • Ability to work onโ€‘site at our San Diego office.

What We Offer
  • Comprehensive health coverage for USโ€‘based employees, including fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, with virtual care and employee assistance resources.

  • Meaningful time off to rest and recharge: 23 days of PTO (accrued), separate sick leave, and paid company holidays.

  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.

  • Equity includedโ€“we believe builders should share in what they build.

  • Free daily catered lunch, snacks, and drinks inโ€‘office.

  • Collaboration with topโ€‘tier engineers, researchers, and product experts in AI and robotics.

  • Freedom to influence the product and own key initiatives.

For this role in California, the expected base salary range is $130,000-$155,000 USD per year; your placement in that range depends on how your experience maps to our internal leveling.
