Job description

The Detroit News, part of the USA TODAY Network, is offering a paid summer journalism internship in Detroit, Michigan, for a current college student or recent graduate. Candidates should be interested in pursuing a career in reporting. 

The Detroit News seeks a determined and curious reporting intern to join its dedicated team of journalists. The selected candidate will be expected to generate a wide range of stories that delve into critical issues relevant to our Michigan readership and be able to do fast-paced reporting to break stories on a variety of subjects. 

Metro Detroit is a world-class news town with big-league sports, a global business community and stories of national political significance. 

What you’ll do: 

  • Conduct information gathering through research and interviews. 
  • Write news articles, take photographs, create videos. 
  • Cover breaking news, features and enterprise. 
  • Craft headlines, social media postings, video content. 
  • Pitch story ideas and multimedia enhancements. 
  • Promote your stories on social media. 

Requirements: 

  • Completion of sophomore year of college or beyond is preferred. 
  • Strong writing, research and fact-checking skills. 
  • Familiarity with newswriting style. 
  • Critical thinking, adaptability, and attention to detail 
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and the minimum liability insurance required by state law. 
  • Availability for evening and weekend work
