Our Finance Department is seeking a motivated Intern to gain practical experience in governmental accounting, financial reporting, budget preparation and monitoring, account reconciliation, auditing support, and fiscal administration.

Working alongside experienced finance professionals, you will develop a strong foundation in public sector accounting principles and financial management practices while contributing to meaningful projects that support organizational goals. If you are detail oriented, analytical, and eager to expand your professional skills, this internship is an excellent opportunity to launch your career in finance and accounting. Our internships offer many benefits such as: Valuable hands on work experience Career development in their field of interest Professional and personal development Flexible schedule At the Inland Empire Utilities Agency safety is critical. The Agency is a regional wastewater treatment agency and wholesale distributor of imported water serving approximately 950,000 people over 242 square miles in western San Bernardino County.

Over 300 personnel contribute to the success of the Agency. The Agency owns and/or operates, and maintains 5 water recycling facilities, 160 miles of sewer collection system, a potable water facility, 19 supply water well sites, 4 sewage lift stations, a recycled water distribution and storage system, 19 groundwater recharge sites, a 400,000-square foot indoor composting facility, and a 66,000 square foot Headquarters building. There are two (2) internship opportunities in the Finance Department.

This recruitment is being conducted to fill two (2) vacancies and will establish an eligibility list which may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur during the active status of the eligibility list. FLSA: Non-Exempt Internships are limited to 25 hours week and 960 hours per fiscal year. (July 1st to June 30th) Note: Internship are not meant to be short term, for example, limited to summer, winter and/or spring breaks.

Individuals interested in short term internships will not be considered. Work schedule is estimated to be approximately 20 to 25 hours a week; Office Hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m The successful candidate will gain hands on training in many aspects of public finance and administration, including budget preparation, budget control, SAP data entry/reporting, and improved proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel applications

Prior experience in general financial accounting is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential for this position. The candidate must be proficient in MS Excel and other MS Office applications.

Intern staff work flexible hours as established by his/her respective supervisor. While the Agency is flexible and will strive to work around an intern's schedule, an intern's work hours will vary and be mutually agreeable between the intern and his/her supervisor. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: May include, but are not limited to the following: Perform the full array of duties assigned including professional administrative work on special projects.

Participate in studies and research for programs and their financial support. Prepare reports and recommendations relative to assigned areas of responsibility. Conduct surveys and performs administrative research and statistical or financial analysis.

Compile data or materials and create spreadsheets, prepare reports, manuals, and publications. Perform other related duties as required including other administrative/technical requirements. Limited travel to offsite locations may be required from time to time.

Perform other related duties as required. QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES: EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent

Graduation or current enrollment in undergraduate or graduate studies in an accredited college or university with major course work in Finance, Accounting, Business or Public Administration or closely related field. While no prior work experience is required, preference will be given to individuals with prior related professional work experience. Qualified interns will have a working knowledge of the methods and techniques of research, statistical analysis, and report preparation.

Interns will have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel is highly desirable. INELIGIBILITY: Individuals that are a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), are ineligible for Intern positions with IEUA.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Principles and practices of public administration; principles of statistical and financial analysis, budgeting and accounting; principles of data collection, and research techniques and methods; basic accounting principles; methods and techniques for basic report preparation and writing; basic principles and practices of grant writing and administration; modern office equipment including a computer and applicable software; proper English, spelling and grammar. ABILITY TO: Analyze statistical and financial data and trends forecasting; prepare and interpret tables, charts, graphs, and flow charts; prepare clear and concise administrative and financial reports; analyze and evaluate new and existing service delivery methods and standard operating procedures; apply applicable laws, codes and regulations; operate office equipment including a computer and applicable software; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; analyze data, situations and research materials; formulate options and make recommendations.
