Job description

Tunnel Design Engineer

Nashville, TN | ENGINEERING, Field Engineering | In office | Full-time

The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.

Role details
  • Assist the Senior Tunnel Engineer in preparing geotechnical and tunnel design reports.
  • Support the development of excavation support drawings and design documentation.
  • Help produce tunnel lining design inputs (e.g., calculations, sketches, models) under supervision.
  • Contribute to ground settlement and construction impact assessments.
  • Assist in compiling monitoring plans and reviewing instrumentation/settlement data.
  • Support planning and coordination of geotechnical investigations (e.g., site visits, data collection).
  • Gather and organize existing geotechnical information and as-built drawings for project due diligence.
  • Provide draft input for construction recommendations and review of contractor submittals.
  • Participate in construction observation, site walks, and inspection activities alongside senior engineers.
  • Assist project teams and operations with geotechnical testing oversight and documentation.
Basic qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Geology, Engineering Geology or related discipline.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience (internship or project experience in tunnels is preferred)
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Master of Science in Geotechnical or Structural Engineering would be a plus.
  • Coursework in Geotechnical engineering (soils and rock), engineering, structural analysis, foundation engineering, hydrology, earthquake engineering, tunnel engineering, reinforced concrete, steel design, constituent modeling.
Additional Requirements
  • Willing to travel to job sites as required to commission & develop new designs, as well as troubleshoot and problem solve existing designs.
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs unassisted.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, crawl, and maneuver in tight spaces, including underground.
  • Ability to work outdoors in heavy construction areas.
