What is an internship in human performance exercise science?

An Internship in Human Performance Exercise Science is a practical, hands-on learning experience that allows students or recent graduates to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings. Interns typically work under supervision in environments such as fitness centers, sports teams, rehabilitation clinics, or research labs. The goal is to gain practical skills in areas like exercise testing, program design, and data analysis while working with athletes or the general population. These internships help bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice, enhancing employability and career readiness in the exercise science field.

What types of projects or responsibilities can I expect during an internship in human performance exercise science?

As an intern in Human Performance Exercise Science, you can expect to assist with exercise testing, data collection, and analysis for research or athlete performance programs. Your daily activities may include helping design and implement training protocols, monitoring participants, and maintaining lab equipment. Interns often work alongside exercise physiologists, strength coaches, and researchers, gaining hands-on experience in both laboratory and field settings. This role provides a unique opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios and develop professional skills valuable for future roles in sports science or health promotion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern in human performance exercise science, and why are they important?

To excel in a Human Performance Exercise Science internship, you need a solid understanding of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and basic nutrition, typically gained through coursework in an exercise science or related undergraduate program. Familiarity with fitness assessment tools, exercise testing protocols, and data analysis software such as SPSS or Excel is often expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and a willingness to learn make interns stand out in this collaborative, client-focused environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering effective support to clients and professionals, ensuring accurate data collection, and contributing positively to performance outcomes.

Put your Exercise Science or Kinesiology degree to work in a hands-on career helping people move better.

StretchLab is seeking Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Sports Medicine, and related graduates who want to turn their education in human movement into meaningful one-on-one client experience.
This is an excellent opportunity for graduates who want a hands-on role rather than a desk job or group fitness position. As a StretchLab Flexologist™, you’ll apply your knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and movement while receiving extensive additional training in assisted stretching.
StretchLab is the industry leader in evidence-based one-on-one assisted stretching. Our Flexologists are movement professionals who complete the Flexologist Training Program™—the only nationally accredited certificate program in assisted stretching.

Our sessions primarily incorporate PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) techniques to help clients improve flexibility, mobility, and range of motion.
What You’ll Do
  •  Provide one-on-one assisted stretch sessions to clients of different ages and activity levels.
  •  Apply your academic knowledge of anatomy, kinesiology, biomechanics, and movement in a practical setting.
  •  Learn to identify mobility and flexibility limitations and follow individualized stretching programs.
  •  Coach and educate clients about movement, flexibility, and mobility.
  •  Develop confidence working hands-on and one-on-one with clients.
  •  Build ongoing client relationships and encourage consistency.
  •  Document client sessions and progress.
  •  Schedule recurring appointments and support continuity of client care.
  •  Participate in ongoing education, staff meetings, first visits, and occasional community events.
What We’re Looking For
  •  Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Sports Medicine, Exercise Physiology, Human Performance, or a related field
  •  Solid understanding of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and human movement.
  •  Comfortable learning hands-on techniques and working closely with clients.
  •  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  •  Genuine passion for movement, mobility, fitness, and helping people improve their quality of life.
  •  Professional, reliable, and eager to continue learning.
  •  Ability to successfully complete StretchLab’s Flexologist Training Program™, including online education, a two-day workshop, and practical training.
You’ve studied how the human body moves. StretchLab gives you the opportunity to put that education into practice every day.
