What is an internship in human centered computing?

An Internship in Human-Centered Computing provides students or recent graduates with practical experience in the interdisciplinary field that focuses on the design, development, and evaluation of computational systems with an emphasis on user needs and experiences. Interns typically work on projects related to user interface design, usability testing, human-computer interaction, and user research. The goal is to apply theories and methods from computer science, psychology, and design to create technology that is accessible, efficient, and enjoyable for people to use. Interns gain hands-on skills and exposure to real-world challenges, preparing them for careers in technology, research, or design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in human centered computing?

To thrive in a Human Centered Computing internship, you need a solid understanding of user-centered design principles, basic programming skills, and experience with usability testing, often supported by coursework in computer science, human-computer interaction, or related fields. Familiarity with prototyping tools (like Figma or Sketch), usability testing software, and data analysis platforms is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities are essential soft skills that help interns effectively collaborate and convey ideas. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating intuitive, user-friendly technologies that address real-world human needs.

What types of projects do interns in human centered computing typically work on, and how do these projects contribute to their professional development?

Interns in Human Centered Computing often work on interdisciplinary projects that involve user interface design, usability testing, prototyping, and data analysis to improve user experiences with technology. These projects may include developing accessible software, conducting user research, or collaborating with engineers and designers to iterate on product features. Such hands-on experience not only builds technical and research skills but also deepens understanding of how to balance user needs with practical constraints. This exposure is valuable for career growth, as it prepares interns for roles in UX/UI design, human-computer interaction research, or product development.

Job description

Are you a senior product designer who thrives on making dense technical and regulatory systems legible, and who is ready to lead design across a portfolio of enterprise platforms? Deloitte Tax has spent decades refining a client-service delivery model that our professionals rely on today. This role gives you the opportunity to bring that same rigor to the technology platforms that support tax service delivery, defining the workflows and usability standards our teams depend on every day. If that sounds like the next step in your career, come join the world's leading professional services firm.

Work you'll do

As a Manager, UX Product Design, you will lead design across a portfolio of internal enterprise platforms that support Deloitte Tax's technology delivery, spanning compliance and governance tools, delivery optimization applications, used by clients and tax professionals to deliver an unparalleled Global Mobility experience. You will translate complex technical and regulatory requirements into decision-ready design, ensuring dense information stays legible at every level of the application experience. You will lead role-specific product designs for the persona groups who depend on these platforms. As a design lead within the team, you will establish design system foundations, research practices, and review cadences that the broader design practice will builds on as it grows, partnering directly with product and engineering leadership to shape strategy and roadmap.

  • Cross-Functional Craft Leadership: Bring deep interaction-design expertise to product and engineering leadership, operating effectively both in collaborative working sessions and independently as a design lead.
  • Design Practice Build-Out: Establish research templates, review mechanisms, and a working design system that give the platform team a durable design foundation as it grows. You will represent design in strategy and roadmap discussions.
  • Self-Service & Escalation Design: Design self-service workflows for high-stakes operations, with safeguards and escalation paths that route edge cases to the right person while preserving operational trust.
  • Multi-Role Workflow Design: Design role-specific workflows for the distinct user groups who depend on Deloitte's platform, such as employees, employers, and Deloitte tax professionals.
  • Progressive Disclosure & Information Architecture: Design layered views and application experiences so complex operational and compliance data stays legible at every level of depth.
  • Complex Systems Translation: Translate dense technical, regulatory, and compliance requirements into decision-ready designs.

A successful candidate would possess these skills:

  • Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills
  • Clear, concise communication with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Adaptability and a strong bias for learning and continuous improvement
