Position Overview

Join our team as a Veterinary Technician who supports hospital operations by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and exceptional service to our patients and clients. Under the supervision of the veterinarians, this position provides technical assistance to doctors, interns, and externs in the field and clinic. Assists with clinic duties such as stocking surgical facilities and field vehicles, cleaning surgery and treatment areas, stalls and facilities. This position is full-time (minimum 40 hours/week) and will require night, weekend, and holiday hours.

Austin Equine Hospital in Driftwood, Texas, is a respected equine practice offering comprehensive ambulatory services, supported by a knowledgeable team passionate about equine health, performance, and client partnership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist veterinarians during examinations and treatment.
2. Perform or assist with diagnostics (x-rays, ultrasound, & shockwave).
3. Collect and deliver lab samples.
4. Horse handling/restraint during examinations and treatment.
5. Daily cleaning and maintenance duties.
6. Restock exam rooms, pharmacy, and field vehicles.
7. Communicate with clients and doctors.
8. Load, unload, and set up equipment.
9. Prepare and maintain various records and reports.
10. Inspect and clean field vehicles and equipment; report maintenance issues to Veterinarians and respond as directed.
11. Assist as needed with the care of horses housed at the clinic, including feeding/watering, cleaning stalls, holding areas, yard areas, and general housekeeping duties.
12. Subject to emergency call-in, weekend, and/or holiday duty as directed by supervisor.

OTHER FUNCTIONS: Regular attendance and punctuality are essential job requirements. Performs other job-related duties as directed by supervisor(s).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Knowledge of:

• Basic methods of equine handling and restraint;
• Equine health and well-being;
• Basic procedures of stall cleaning and maintenance;
• Professional Customer Service skills;
• Personal Computer skills and software, including Microsoft Office;
• Proper English usage and grammar.

Ability to:

• Handle horses safely and effectively;
• Operate a variety of equipment and related gear used for securing and restraining horses;
• Operate a variety of equipment and related gear used for examination and treatment of horses;Identify horse breeds, gender, and age;
• Identify signs of horse illness, disease, and injury;
• Perform general cleaning tasks using a variety of chemical and detergent products;
• Perform moderate manual labor including lifting materials and loading/unloading horses into trailers;
• Perform various manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions;
• Work a schedule which may include nights, weekends and holidays;
• Demonstrate personal communication skills including effective telephone skills;
• Perform multiple tasks simultaneously in a timely manner;
• Conduct business with the public in a professional, courteous manner;
• Work independently in the absence of supervision;
• Work in a safety-conscious environment and to follow & promote good safety practices;
• Learn, understand, and apply pertinent rules and regulations;
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the job;

• Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, operating assigned equipment, and communicating with others; must have visual abilities including close vision, distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve:
  • Working with animals and exposure to animal waste and bodily fluids, exposure to loud noise, exposure to various weather conditions, working closely with others, working outside normal business hours and in hours of darkness; exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, grasses, weeds, and other vegetation, and exposure to airborne particles;
• Maintain physical condition needed to accomplish the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include;
  • Working around, securing, and restraining horses of all ages and temperaments; walking, sitting, stooping or standing for long periods of time; lifting and carrying heavy materials in excess of 50 pounds; climbing, crawling, squatting, kneeling, and running; working on uneven and/or slippery surfaces.
• Maintain a safe driving record.
• Maintain mental capacity sufficient to accomplish the performance of assigned duties and Responsibilities, which may include:
  • Effective interaction and communication with others;
  • Prepare clear and concise reports;
  • Making sound decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, and LICENSING:

• REQUIRED:
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to be considered for this position.
  • Equine experience.
  • Possession of a valid Texas or other U.S. State-issued driver's license.
  • Knowledge of basic methods of equine handling and restraint, ability to work with difficult horses safely and effectively.
  • Proper English usage and grammar.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Maintain a physical condition needed to accomplish duties and responsibilities (ability to life 50lbs).
• PREFERRED:
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or the Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT).
  • Ability to give intramuscular and intravenous injections.
  • Knowledge of equine health and well-being.
  • Basic procedures of stall cleaning and maintenance.
  • Professional Customer Service skills.
  • Personal Computer skills and software, including Microsoft Office.

SCHEDULE

• Full-time with a set schedule which includes:
  • Summer: Monday-Thursday from 8am-6pm
  • Winter, Fall, Spring: Tuesday-Friday from 8am-6pm
