How much do internship helicopter pilot jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for internship helicopter pilot in the United States is $100,249.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $90,000.00 and $112,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What types of tasks and hands-on experiences can I expect during an internship as a helicopter pilot?

As an internship helicopter pilot, you can expect to support licensed pilots with pre-flight inspections, flight planning, and safety checks, while gradually participating in supervised flight operations. Interns often assist with maintenance documentation, observe aerial navigation, and help coordinate communications with ground crews. Most internships emphasize learning regulatory compliance and operational protocols, providing a structured environment for skill development. You'll work closely with experienced pilots and maintenance teams, gaining valuable exposure to the daily workflow and safety culture of helicopter operations.

Is 30 too late to become a helicopter pilot?

Becoming a helicopter pilot at age 30 is possible, as many pilots start training in their late teens or early twenties. Age may impact certain career opportunities or physical requirements, but with proper training, certifications, and experience, individuals can pursue a career as a helicopter pilot at 30 or older.

Is being a pilot a 9-5 job?

Helicopter pilots, including internship pilots, often work irregular hours that depend on flight schedules, weather conditions, and client needs. The job may involve early mornings, evenings, weekends, and on-call hours, making it generally not a standard 9-5 position. Flexibility and readiness to work outside typical office hours are common in this field.

Is there a high demand for helicopter pilots?

The demand for helicopter pilots, including internship positions, is generally steady due to ongoing needs in sectors such as emergency services, transportation, and aerial surveying. Job opportunities can vary based on industry growth, geographic location, and pilot experience, with certifications like commercial pilot licenses often required. Overall, helicopter pilot roles tend to have consistent demand in specialized fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Helicopter Pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Helicopter Pilot, you need foundational flight training, a student or private pilot license (typically with a rotorcraft rating), and basic aviation knowledge. Familiarity with flight simulators, navigation systems, and aviation weather tools is important, and progress toward a commercial helicopter pilot certificate is often expected. Strong situational awareness, communication skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure set outstanding candidates apart. These skills ensure safe flight operations, effective teamwork, and readiness for the responsibilities of a professional helicopter pilot.

What are internship helicopter pilots?

Internship helicopter pilots are individuals, often students or recent graduates, who are gaining hands-on flying experience as part of an internship program with a helicopter operator, flight school, or aviation company. These internships are designed to provide practical training, mentorship, and exposure to real-world aviation operations under the supervision of licensed pilots. Internship helicopter pilots typically assist with flight planning, pre-flight inspections, and sometimes have opportunities to log flight hours. Such positions help aspiring pilots build the experience and skills necessary to pursue a full career as a professional helicopter pilot.
