What is an Internship Heat Exchanger?

An Internship Heat Exchanger typically refers to an internship position focused on the study, design, or maintenance of heat exchangers in industrial or research settings. Heat exchangers are devices used to transfer heat between two or more fluids without mixing them. During this internship, students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience working with heat exchanger systems, learning about their operation, efficiency, and application in industries such as energy, HVAC, or chemical processing. The role may involve tasks such as data analysis, design support, troubleshooting, and assisting engineers in testing and optimization. It's an opportunity to apply engineering principles in a practical environment and develop valuable technical skills.

What types of projects or responsibilities can I expect during an internship focused on heat exchangers?

As an intern working with heat exchangers, you'll typically assist with design calculations, performance analysis, and thermal modeling under the supervision of experienced engineers. You may contribute to drafting technical drawings using CAD software, help with testing prototypes in a lab setting, and participate in troubleshooting or improving existing systems. Collaboration is common, as you'll likely work alongside mechanical engineers, process engineers, and manufacturing teams to ensure solutions are practical and efficient. This hands-on experience is valuable for understanding both the technical and teamwork aspects required in thermal systems engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Heat Exchanger Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Heat Exchanger Intern, you need a foundational understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer principles, often gained through coursework in mechanical or chemical engineering. Familiarity with engineering design software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks, as well as data analysis tools such as MATLAB, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for accurately supporting design, analysis, and troubleshooting tasks in heat exchanger projects within engineering teams.

What is the difference between Internship Heat Exchanger vs Heat Exchanger Technician?

AspectInternship Heat ExchangerHeat Exchanger Technician
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed relevant technical educationVocational training or technical certifications, some experience
Work EnvironmentTraining sites, laboratories, or entry-level settingsIndustrial plants, maintenance facilities, or manufacturing environments
Job FocusLearning, assisting, and gaining practical experienceMaintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting heat exchanger systems

Internship Heat Exchanger roles are designed for students or recent graduates gaining foundational knowledge, while Heat Exchanger Technicians are experienced professionals responsible for operational maintenance. The internship provides training, whereas the technician role involves hands-on work in industrial settings.

Job description

InnoTECH Staffing is seeking a Mechanical Thermal System Design Engineer who has experience design, modeling, and validation of thermal systems in energy, HVAC, refrigeration etc. for a start-up in the Boston area.

This requires being onsite 5 days a week.

** Must be a US Citizen or Green Card holder **

We are looking for someone who can help design and optimize a heat pump system and it's core subsystems. If you've got experience working with thermal or fluidic systems or have designed complex machines like engines, chemical reactors, rockets - let's talk!

Overview

· This role will be primarily responsible for expanding experimental and design capabilities, improving the performance and efficiency of prototype systems, and ensuring that the testing programs generate clear, actionable insights.

· We are seeking a talented and creative problem solver who can tackle complex, open-ended challenges in thermal systems and thermofluidics with a disciplined engineering approach. The ideal candidate will thrive in a small, fast-moving startup environment and be willing to take on a range of responsibilities as needed to advance the technology.

· While the primary focus will be designing and executing investigative experiments and validation testing in the laboratory, members of our team are expected to contribute broadly across the organization. This includes prototype and product design, materials development, systems engineering, controls, and occasional support for company-building initiatives.

· The successful candidate will bring 3+ years of experience in thermal, mechanical, chemical, or related engineering disciplines, with demonstrated expertise in the design, modeling, and validation of thermal systems in energy, HVAC, refrigeration, or similar applications. Strong hands-on experience working with prototype hardware is essential. Familiarity with heat exchangers, phase-change phenomena, and coupled thermal–fluid systems is strongly preferred.

What You’ll Do

· Design and analyze key components of solid refrigerant systems, including heat exchangers, thermal interfaces, and system-level heat flow paths

· Develop analytical and numerical models to predict system behavior, identify performance bottlenecks, and guide engineering decisions

· Use company test rigs and prototype subsystems to characterize thermal and mass transport properties of solid refrigerant composites

· Plan, execute, and interpret thermal performance experiments on prototype subsystems and integrated systems

· Collaborate with engineering team members to design experimental equipment and develop reliable testing methodologies

· Improve and expand test infrastructure, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems

· Contribute to the development of company culture, technical rigor, and engineering best practices

· Mentor interns and co-op students working on research and development projects

What You’ll Bring

· BS degree plus 3-6 years of industry experience designing and developing thermal systems in energy, HVAC, refrigeration, or related industries

· Strong hands-on experience designing, building, and testing prototype hardware or engineering systems

· Experience applying thermal modeling tools and analytical methods to guide design decisions and reduce development risk

· Deep understanding of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics

· A disciplined engineering mindset that balances creative problem solving with rigorous experimental design, including familiarity with structured testing, statistical methods, and systematic knowledge development

· A pragmatic approach focused on generating results that directly enable the next stage of technology development

· The ability to work independently, collaborate effectively within a small team, and take leadership when needed

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this role is commensurate with experience but within the $110-160K range. We are committed to equitable compensation across our company, and we offer a generous benefits package to make sure you have the support you need. We cover 60% of the medical insurance premiums for our employees and their dependents on our base plans, and 100% of dental, and vision insurance premiums. We offer an unlimited Paid Time Off policy and encourage people to take regular vacation. We provide an employee-contribution 401(k) plan in addition to many other benefits. Every employee, regardless of gender identity or expression, is also eligible for 12 weeks of paid parental bonding leave after their 1-year anniversary at the company.
