Your work environment at EXP 

We're looking for a motivated new graduate or early-career professional to join our Geotechnical team as a Junior Materials Technician. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in both field and laboratory testing, while working alongside experienced engineers and technicians who will support your development.

You will be based out of our Calgary, AB office and work on projects across the surrounding area.

What a day at EXP has in store for you


As a Junior Materials Technician, you will build practical skills by supporting construction and materials testing activities, including:

  • Perform field testing on construction materials such as:
    • Concrete (slump, air content, casting cylinders)
    • Soil (in-place density testing using nuclear densometer)
  • Assist with asphalt and concrete coring and sampling
  • Collect soil, asphalt, and aggregate samples from project sites
  • Support laboratory testing, such as:
    • Concrete compressive strength testing
    • Grain size analysis
    • Proctor compaction tests
    • Basic geotechnical and asphalt testing
  • Conduct site visits to observe construction and support quality control reviews
  • Work with engineers and project teams to help identify and resolve site-related issues
  • Communicate with contractors and clients in a professional and responsive manner
  • Participate in team meetings and ongoing training opportunities

What your experience looks like

  • Recent graduate (or nearing completion) of a Civil Engineering Technology diploma or related program
  • Basic knowledge or exposure to materials testing (concrete, soil, asphalt) is an asset
  • Strong interest in working outdoors and on construction sites
  • Positive attitude, reliability, and willingness to learn new skills
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
  • Valid Canadian driver's license (required for site visits)
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
