Job description

Description Internship Dates: July - September 30, 2026 This position will remain open until filled, with applications reviewed on an ongoing basis. The purpose of this position is to provide technical and analytical support to the GIS and IT Department with spatial database management, data collection, application development, and specialized mapping projects as assigned. Performing in a graduate-intern capacity, the individual will gain hands-on experience learning city functions, municipal data infrastructure, and departmental responsibilities. This is an entry-level professional position designed for individuals seeking a career in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Urban Planning, Data Analytics, within local government and/or Public Administration.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities Spatial Data Collection & Management: Collect, update, and maintain geospatial datasets using GPS equipment and GIS software. Integrate field-collected data into the city's enterprise GIS databases. GIS Mapping & Analysis: Perform spatial analysis, buffer queries, and data modeling to support urban planning, asset management, and infrastructure projects.

Create high-quality maps, digital dashboards, and web map applications for internal and public use. Customer Service & Technical Assistance: Provide technical and mapping support to city staff and citizens, including troubleshooting databases, creating metadata, and validating datasets. Cross-Departmental Collaboration and Spatial Solutions: Coordinate with multiple departments to streamline workflows, digitize legacy paper maps, and develop custom spatial solutions that enhance the accuracy and usability of city records.

Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; One year - experience with ESRI ArcGIS software, spatial data management, and technical troubleshooting. Proficiency with databases, spreadsheets, or relevant analytical tools. Valid driver's license.

Supplemental Information Knowledge of GIS principles, cartography, spatial analysis, and data standards. Skill in using ESRI ArcGIS products, geodatabases, and metadata tools. Ability to diagnose and resolve data, mapping, and application issues.

Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple departments and respond to customer service needs professionally. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail.
