Internship Gis Geology information

What is an internship GIS geology?

Internship GIS Geology positions are entry-level opportunities for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field of geology, focusing on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). These internships typically involve working with mapping software, analyzing spatial data, and assisting in geological studies or projects. Interns may work in industries such as environmental consulting, mining, oil and gas, or academia. The experience helps build valuable technical and analytical skills relevant to a career in geology or GIS. Internships can last from a few months to a year, depending on the organization.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during an internship in GIS geology?

As an intern in GIS Geology, you can expect to work on a range of projects that involve collecting, analyzing, and visualizing geological data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Typical tasks may include digitizing geologic maps, managing spatial databases, assisting with field data collection, and preparing reports or presentations based on your analysis. Interns often collaborate closely with geologists, GIS specialists, and environmental scientists, providing an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and develop both technical and teamwork skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship GIS geology, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Internship GIS Geology role, you generally need a background in geology or earth sciences, foundational knowledge of GIS concepts, and relevant coursework or experience. Familiarity with GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS, and sometimes basic programming or database management skills, are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns interpret data and collaborate with project teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing accurate geospatial analyses and contributing value to geological research and mapping projects.

What is the difference between Internship Gis Geology vs Geoscience Intern?

AspectInternship Gis GeologyGeoscience Intern
Required CredentialsEnrolled in geology, GIS, or related programsEnrolled in geoscience, geology, or environmental science programs
Work EnvironmentFieldwork, GIS mapping, data analysis in geological settingsField surveys, data collection, lab work in geoscience projects
Employer & Industry UsageMining, environmental consulting, GIS firmsResearch institutions, environmental agencies, energy companies

Internship Gis Geology and Geoscience Intern roles often overlap in skills and work environments, focusing on geology and GIS applications. However, Internship Gis Geology emphasizes GIS mapping and geological data, while Geoscience Interns may engage more broadly in geoscientific research and fieldwork. Both are valuable entry points into the geoscience industry, with similar educational backgrounds and industry usage.

Job description

The GIS Technician supports the spatial data, mapping, and geographic information system (GIS) services that underpin mine planning, operations, geology, environmental, and regulatory programs at the Stibnite Gold Project. This is an entry-level, developmental position intended for recent graduates with foundational GIS coursework. Working under the direction of the Principal Mine Surveyor and senior survey/GIS staff, the GIS Technician acquires, organizes, and maintains spatial data; produces maps and figures; performs routine quality checks on geospatial datasets; and supports field GPS and drone data workflows. The role is structured to build technical depth in mine-context GIS over time, with progression toward the GIS Specialist role and adjacent technical positions on the survey and geology teams.
Requirements
EH&S
• Demonstrate and maintain Perpetua's commitment to safety and environmental protection as core values.
• Comply with site safety standards, MSHA requirements, and Perpetua policies whenever working in field environments.
• Support sustainable mining practices through accurate spatial data that informs reclamation planning, environmental monitoring, and permit compliance.
GIS Data Management
• Build and maintain spatial datasets (vector, raster, LiDAR, point cloud) under established metadata, projection, and naming conventions, consistent with mine survey data standards (SRV-008/SRV-012).
• Digitize, georeference, and attribute features from field data, drone imagery, scanned drawings, and contractor deliverables.
• Maintain version control, audit trails, and organized project archives within the enterprise GIS environment.
• Support land tenure, claim, and easement record-keeping in coordination with the Principal Mine Surveyor.
Mapping and Visualization
• Produce maps, figures, and visualizations to support mine engineering, geology, environmental, permitting, community engagement, and external reporting needs.
• Apply consistent cartographic standards (symbology, scale, legend, projection) across products.
• Iterate map products in response to reviewer feedback from technical leads and external consultants.
QA/QC and Data Integrity
• Perform routine quality checks (topology, attribute completeness, projection consistency, metadata) on spatial datasets.
• Flag and document data anomalies for resolution by the GIS Specialist or Principal Mine Surveyor.
• Maintain organized file structures, project archives, and metadata records to support audit and regulatory review.
Field and Survey Support
• Support field GPS data collection, including equipment setup, basic troubleshooting, and post-processing under direction from senior survey staff.
• Assist with as-built data collection, drone/UAV imagery processing, and integration of field data into the GIS environment.
• Coordinate with Survey Technicians and Senior Mine Surveyors on shared data and field schedules.
Learning and Development
• Build technical proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS Pro, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and supporting tools used in mine survey and engineering workflows.
• Develop scripting and automation skills (Python, ArcPy, ModelBuilder) to improve workflow efficiency.
• Participate in cross-training across mine engineering, surveying, geology, and environmental workflows to broaden technical understanding and identify a long-term technical track.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
• Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Geomatics, Environmental Science, Geology, Natural Resources, or a related physical/earth science discipline.
• A degree specifically in GIS or Geography is not required. Candidates from adjacent disciplines (e.g., Environmental Science, Geology, Forestry, Civil/Mining Engineering) with documented GIS coursework, certificates, or capstone work are strongly encouraged to apply.
• Recent graduates encouraged to apply.
Experience
• 0-2 years of professional GIS experience, 3 + years preferred.
• Internship, capstone, undergraduate research, or volunteer experience producing GIS deliverables is valued in lieu of professional experience.
• Exposure to mining, environmental, or land-use applications is an asset, not a requirement.
Skills
• Working proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS Pro, including geoprocessing tools, symbology, and basic spatial analysis.
• Familiarity with coordinate systems, projections, datums, and cartographic conventions.
• Microsoft Excel competency (filtering, sorting, basic formulas, simple pivots).
• Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to data QA.
• Effective written and verbal communication; ability to take direction, ask clarifying questions, and follow established procedures.
• Eagerness to develop skills in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Python/ArcPy scripting, drone data processing, and 3D mine modeling tools (e.g., Vulcan, Deswik, MineSight) over time.
• Reliable computer skills in a Windows environment and the Microsoft 365 suite.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to work at a desk and operate a computer for extended periods.
• Adequate vision, hearing, and communication skills to perform job duties safely and effectively.
• Willingness to work in both office and field environments, including occasional exposure to variable weather, rugged terrain, and active mining/heavy equipment areas.
• Flexibility to work on-site at the Stibnite Gold Project as required.
Schedule & Logistics
This position will be based at Perpetua Resources Stibnite Gold Project in Idaho located approximately 3 1/2 hours from Donnelly. The initial work schedule will be fourteen days on and twelve days off, however this is subject to change and will vary depending on the number of days in the month to ensure employees work the correct number of required days each month.
