Job description

Pharmacist Outpatient (Flexi)

The Outpatient Pharmacist is responsible for maintaining the daily operations of the Outpatient Pharmacy to ensure accurate and timely service. Pharmacists are responsible for providing medications and other supplies as needed for adequate patient care according to professional standards and practices. Additionally, outpatient pharmacists evaluate drug therapies, counsel patients, immunize, and perform medication therapy management.

These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed daily. Other duties may be assigned as needed to support the vision, fulfill the mission, and abide by the values of the organization.

  • Direct the daily workflow of the Outpatient Pharmacy to ensure accurate and timely dispensing and/or delivery of medications and supplies.

  • Review prescription orders for appropriateness, including safety and efficacy.

  • Perform prospective drug utilization reviews, assessing for proper dosage, use directions, drug interactions, contraindications, duplicate therapies, and other regimen-related considerations, and make interventions as needed.

  • Perform medication filling, checking, and review.

  • Manage pharmacotherapeutic services in accordance with institutional or state standards.

  • Provide immunizations and other direct patient care as indicated, in accordance with institutional or state practice standards and/or protocols.

  • Assign support duties to technicians, interns, and students as needed to ensure completion of all tasks.

  • Counsel patients and families regarding all aspects of medication use, including for hospital discharge patients as needed to support the Meds-to-Beds program (medication preparation and delivery).

  • In conjunction with the pharmacy manager and buyer, assist with inventory management and compliance with inventory processes.

  • Provide oversight of the cash management system, ensure accounting receives appropriate records of all transactions, and provide a daily cash report.

  • Maintain appropriate records for all medications and processes in the pharmacy, including controlled substances and other required documentation.

  • Maintain competency with pharmacy knowledge and techniques to ensure quality care for patients of all ages.

  • Follow established department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety, environmental, and infection control protocols.

  • Demonstrate competency with pharmacy automation, medication distribution, and applicable technology.

  • Contribute to departmental cost-reduction and/or revenue-generation efforts.

  • Contribute to or lead departmental quality improvement efforts as approved by the manager.

  • Serve as a preceptor to pharmacy residents and pharmacy students.

  • Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care.

  • Be cross-trained to work and provide services at all outpatient pharmacy locations.

Education and Experience

Minimum Required Education: Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Preferred Education: Doctor of Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy school Experience: One year of outpatient pharmacy experience preferred

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Must be currently licensed to work as a Pharmacist in the State of North Carolina; Virginia licensure preferred.

  • Virginia Basic Life Support (BLS) is required within 6 months of hire.
