Job description

Cramer Fish Sciences (CFS) is seeking an entry-level MOLECULAR BIOLOGY / GENETICS TECHNICIAN to join our Genidaqs Laboratory in West Sacramento, CA.

This full-time position is ideal for early-career professionals looking to build hands-on experience in molecular biology, genetics, and environmental research. Under the guidance of experienced laboratory staff, you will support laboratory processes, assist with fieldwork, and contribute to high-quality data collection that informs natural resource management.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform routine molecular laboratory tasks under supervision, including DNA extraction, PCR, and quantitative PCR (qPCR)
  • Assist with laboratory work for a variety of projects, following established protocols
  • Participate in field activities such as environmental DNA (eDNA) or tissue sample collection; may include moderate physical exertion
  • Support basic equipment care, purchasing, and shipping logistics
  • Conduct animal necropsy on fish after appropriate training
  • Assist with general lab upkeep and inventory management
  • Support database entry and sample management tasks with attention to detail
  • Assist with research and development activities to evaluate new technologies or methods
  • Participate in fieldwork logistics and support daily operations (with opportunities to grow into field crew lead responsibilities over time)
  • Conduct work in a safe, efficient, and organized manner
  • Provide project support by preparing samples, helping coordinate field collection activities, and preparing data for review
  • Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/MINIMUM QUALIFICATONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Environmental Science, or a related biological science field
  • Foundational understanding of molecular biology through coursework or hands-on experience (e.g., internships, research labs, or field courses)
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite; familiarity with Access preferred
  • Ability to accurately interpret and follow established protocols, guidelines, and procedures
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks with overlapping deadlines
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively within a team
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail in data collection, entry, and basic analysis
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and a collaborative mindset

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to work for extended periods in a laboratory setting and occasionally perform computerized data analysis
  • Willingness to work irregular hours (including some weekends/evenings) depending on field needs
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and occasionally on rugged terrain
  • Comfort working in aquatic environments, including from boats, and wading or swimming in rivers, streams, and lakes
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to travel for field assignments, including multi-day trips to remote areas

COMPENSATION:

Pay Range: $21.00 - $27.00/hour.
