What is an internship film grip?

Internship film grips are entry-level assistants who work on film or television sets, helping the grip department with tasks like setting up and maintaining camera rigs, lights, and other equipment. As interns, they learn the basics of grip work, including safety procedures, equipment handling, and set etiquette. This role provides valuable hands-on experience for those interested in pursuing a career in film production, especially in technical and behind-the-scenes positions.

What does an internship film grip do?

As a film grip intern, you’ll assist with setting up and maintaining equipment that supports cameras and lighting, such as rigging, dollies, and stands. Your role is hands-on and often involves collaborating closely with experienced grips, electricians, and camera teams to ensure scenes are lit and shot safely and efficiently. Interns often help transport and organize gear, learn how to execute quick changes on set, and may be tasked with basic repairs or adjustments. This provides valuable exposure to industry-standard tools and workflows, and you’ll gain practical experience that can lead to more advanced positions in the grip department.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an internship film grip?

To thrive as an Internship Film Grip, you need a basic understanding of film production, physical stamina, and familiarity with set equipment, often gained through hands-on experience or relevant coursework. Knowledge of grip tools, rigging systems, and safety protocols is typically required, and some productions may value OSHA safety certification. Strong teamwork, problem-solving ability, and a proactive attitude help you stand out on set. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and seamless support for the camera and lighting departments, which is crucial for successful film production.
