Position Description
The Laser & Press Brake Fabrication Operations Intern will support daily manufacturing activities within the fabrication department-specifically laser cutting and press brake forming. This role assists in operator autonomous maintenance, documentation and standardization, improving machine uptime, training support, best-practice development, and operations analysis. Interns gain hands-on experience with FIBER lasers, press brakes, nesting/programming workflows, operator guidance, and continuous improvement projects, preparing them for careers in advanced manufacturing and CI/Lean systems.
Key Responsibilities
  • Help develop daily cleaning, inspection, and maintenance checklists for laser and press brake equipment.
  • Assist operators in tagging defects, performing minor upkeep tasks, and building visual standards (e.g., red/green tag systems, visuals).
  • Support TPM implementation steps and track recurring issues reported by operators.
  • Document step-by-step standard work instructions for laser cutting setup, press brake setup, tooling changeovers, and inspection routines.
  • Create setup sheets, bend sequence documentation, and visual one-point lessons with engineering and operators.
  • Standardize common tasks such as tool selection, part orientation, de-nesting, and machine calibration.
  • Create plan for optimizing laser cutting and unloading sequencing and operator balancing
  • Support operators with nesting optimization to reduce scrap and improve sheet utilization.
  • Help maintain or update FIBER programs (under supervision) for lasers and press brakes.
  • Prepare and audit job packets, setup files, and DXF/program sheets for operators.
  • Observe machine operations and verify part conformance during training or trials.
  • Record downtime events, categorize loss reasons, and support corrective-action development.
  • Analyze machine setups to identify wastes in movement, tool changes, or programming.
  • Implement Lean best practices such as optimized workflow layouts, tool-board organization, and cycle-time observations.
  • Create training materials, visual aids, and competency checklists for laser and press brake operators.
  • Support onboarding or cross-training sessions under supervision.
  • Capture tribal knowledge from subject matter experts and convert it into formal training content

Required Education & Qualifications
Education
  • Pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering (or related technical field).

Technical Skills
  • Interest in fabrication, FIBER lasers, press brakes, or metal forming.
  • Ability to read blueprints/engineering drawings and basic GD&T.
  • Foundational Lean knowledge (5S, setup reduction, standard work).
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM or nesting software is a plus.
  • Comfort using measuring tools (calipers, tapes, gauges).
