Job description

About Us
This is a full-time research laboratory technician position. The position is in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology. Under general supervision and with some latitude for exercising independent technical judgment, the lab technician is responsible for planning and carrying out research procedures related to urinary extracellular vesicles associated with kidney disease.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs routine processing of human biospecimens for long-term storage and maintains accurate records of sample collection, processing, and inventory.
  • Performs established procedures for urinary extracellular vesicle (EV) isolation, processing, and storage under the guidance of the Principal Investigator or senior laboratory personnel.
  • Conducts routine extracellular vesicle characterization using established protocols, including particle quantification, imaging, and Western blot analysis.
  • Performs RNA isolation from extracellular vesicles using standardized laboratory procedures.
  • Conducts flow cytometry experiments for extracellular vesicle characterization following established protocols.
  • Maintains laboratory inventory by monitoring routine supplies, assisting with ordering, and ensuring proper storage and disposal of laboratory materials in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Collects, records, and organizes scientific data using computerized software and assists with basic data analysis as directed.
  • Coordinates the submission and tracking of biological samples for assays performed by institutional core facilities or external laboratories.
  • Assists with maintaining laboratory organization, equipment, and documentation to support ongoing research activities.
  • Follows established laboratory protocols and safety procedures and performs technical procedures with occasional guidance.
  • Rarely train other lab members;
  • Rarely guide other lab members;
  • A simple / limited understanding of scientific literature and the research goals and rationale is required;
  • Occasionally analyze data;
  • Rarely interpret data;

QUALIFICATIONS
Required to have at least a Bachelor's Degree in a related science or equivalent skills and related experience, and zero to two years of related experience. Prior laboratory experience is preferred:
  • Speaks clearly and expresses self well in one-on-one conversations and groups
  • Develops effective written communications and uses them appropriately
  • Interacts and proactively shares information with internal and external contacts where appropriate
  • Develops effective relationships with peers, students, and employees
  • Assumes responsibility to ensure issues/concerns will be addressed and monitors them through conclusion
  • Identifies, defines and analyzes information and situations before recommending a course of action
  • Effectively manages own time and resources
  • Seeks to apply technology and innovation to improve efficiency and solve problems

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rates for this are listed below. This rate is based on the 1199 bargaining unit contract.
