What types of tasks and responsibilities can I expect during an Internship as an Enrolled Agent?

As an Enrolled Agent intern, you can expect to assist with preparing tax returns, conducting tax research, organizing client documentation, and supporting senior agents during client consultations. You'll gain hands-on experience with tax software, learn about IRS regulations, and often collaborate with accountants and tax professionals within your team. This role provides a valuable opportunity to develop technical tax skills, understand client-facing processes, and build a foundation for a full-time tax career. Interns are typically encouraged to ask questions and actively participate in tax planning discussions, which helps accelerate learning and professional growth.

What is an Internship Enrolled Agent?

An Internship Enrolled Agent is a student or recent graduate who is working in a tax-related internship position while pursuing or considering the Enrolled Agent (EA) credential. Enrolled Agents are federally-authorized tax practitioners empowered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before the IRS. As an intern, you typically assist with tax preparation, research, and administrative support under the supervision of licensed EAs or other tax professionals. This role provides hands-on experience and exposure to the field of tax resolution and representation, which can be valuable if you plan to become a fully credentialed Enrolled Agent in the future.

How to be an enrolled agent with no experience?

Becoming an enrolled agent (EA) requires passing the IRS Special Enrollment Examination (SEE), which covers tax knowledge and procedures. While experience is not mandatory, studying tax laws, gaining relevant knowledge, and preparing thoroughly are essential steps before applying for the EA credential and completing the background check.

Who makes more, CPA or EA?

Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) generally earn higher salaries than Enrolled Agents (EAs) due to their broader responsibilities, advanced certifications, and often more senior roles in accounting and finance. CPAs typically have more extensive training and may work in diverse environments such as public accounting, corporate finance, or consulting, which can contribute to higher compensation. However, EAs specialize in tax preparation and representation, and their earnings can vary based on experience and client base.

What are the big 4 internships?

The Big 4 internships refer to internship programs offered by Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY), and KPMG. These firms provide accounting, audit, consulting, and tax internships that are highly competitive and often serve as a pathway to full-time employment as an enrolled agent or accountant.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Enrolled Agent, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Enrolled Agent, you need foundational knowledge of tax laws, accounting principles, and a pursuit of or eligibility for Enrolled Agent (EA) certification. Familiarity with tax preparation software, IRS systems, and standard office tools is typically expected. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong interpersonal communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accuracy in tax filings, effective client service, and compliance with regulatory standards in a dynamic tax environment.
