Job description

Senior Electrical Distribution Designer

Location: Shorewood, IL
Work Arrangement: Mostly Remote | Occasional Office & Job Site Visits
Salary: $110,000–$130,000 annually
Experience: 10+ years
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
PE License: Not required

At The Will Group, we believe great engineering is about more than completing a design—it’s about solving problems, improving how work gets done, and creating solutions that make a real impact.

For nearly four decades, The Will Group has grown into a diverse organization serving the construction and utility industries through engineering, infrastructure, supply, manufacturing, and program management.

Now, we're looking for an experienced Senior Electrical Distribution Designer to join our Power Division and take on some of our most technically challenging utility distribution projects.

The Opportunity

This is not a traditional production-design role.

As a Senior Electrical Distribution Designer, you will serve as a senior technical resource responsible for complex electric distribution design projects, typically ranging from 4 kV to 34 kV. You’ll take ownership of projects from field information and concept development through final, construction-ready design packages.

You’ll work with leading utilities, including Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) and other Exelon operating companies, while helping shape the technical standards, processes, and best practices used by our team.

This is an opportunity for someone who knows utility distribution inside and out, understands what works in the field—not just on paper—and wants to be recognized as a technical leader.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design development of complex overhead and underground electric distribution projects, typically 4 kV–34 kV.
  • Develop construction-ready utility distribution design packages from field information through final deliverables.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of utility standards, construction practices, field conditions, and constructability.
  • Perform and/or review system studies, including load flow, voltage drop, short circuit, and protection coordination analyses.
  • Serve as a primary technical resource for complex distribution design challenges.
  • Review design packages for technical accuracy, constructability, consistency, and compliance with company and client standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to Designers, Junior Designers, Engineering Associates, Project Engineers, and other team members.
  • Mentor and develop less-experienced designers and engineers.
  • Help develop, maintain, and improve TWG drafting standards, design procedures, and technical best practices.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design quality, efficiency, project delivery, and overall department performance.
  • Support Project Engineers and Senior Engineers with project planning and technical coordination.
  • Participate in client meetings and technical discussions.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, software, and design methodologies that can improve utility design and project delivery.
  • Collaborate with field, engineering, project management, and client teams to develop practical, constructible solutions.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

What You Bring

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in electric utility distribution, power delivery, or utility consulting.
  • Significant experience designing overhead and/or underground electric distribution systems.
  • Strong understanding of utility standards, distribution design workflows, construction practices, and field conditions.
  • Experience developing detailed design packages for construction.
  • Proficiency with utility design and analysis tools.
  • Experience with GIS, work management, and utility design platforms.
  • Strong understanding of constructability and installation practices.
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to occasionally travel to job sites.

Preferred:

  • Direct experience supporting ComEd projects or similar electric utilities.
  • Experience with other Exelon operating companies such as PECO, BGE, or Pepco.
  • Knowledge of Illinois utility regulatory and permitting requirements.
  • Experience with Distributed Energy Resource (DER) interconnections, including solar, battery storage, and EV infrastructure.
  • Experience supporting grid modernization, automation, smart grid, or reliability improvement programs.
  • Experience with urban underground and network distribution systems.

No PE Required

A Professional Engineer license is not required for this position.

We are looking for deep, hands-on utility distribution design expertise and the ability to independently solve complex technical challenges.

Why Join The Will Group?

At TWG, you’ll have the opportunity to do meaningful work while being part of a team that values technical expertise, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Compensation and Benefits:

Good Faith Salary Range: The annual starting salary for this position is between $110,000 to $130,000 annually. Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.

Additional Benefits Include:

•          An excellent benefits package including, Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, 401K with company match, generous PTO allotment, paid volunteer time off, 10 ½ days of holiday pay, continuing education reimbursement and much more.

•          A work environment that values and respects diverse people, perspectives, cultures, and ideas.

Where There’s A Will, There’s A Way.

If you're an experienced utility distribution professional who wants to take on challenging projects, influence technical standards, mentor others, and help shape the future of our Power Division, we'd like to hear from you.
