Internship Drone Mapping information

What is an Internship in Drone Mapping?

An Internship in Drone Mapping is a temporary, hands-on training position where students or recent graduates learn to operate drones and use specialized software to collect, process, and analyze aerial data for mapping purposes. Interns typically assist with flight planning, drone operation, data acquisition, and creating maps or 3D models from collected imagery. This role provides valuable experience in the fields of geospatial technology, surveying, environmental monitoring, and related industries that use drone technology for mapping and data collection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Drone Mapping specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Internship Drone Mapping role, you need a basic understanding of geospatial concepts, familiarity with drone operations, and often an educational background in geography, engineering, or a related field. Experience with drone piloting, GIS software (like ArcGIS or QGIS), and relevant certifications such as FAA Part 107 are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help interns excel when collecting and analyzing aerial data. These skills ensure accurate data capture, compliance with regulations, and effective collaboration on mapping projects.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during an Internship in Drone Mapping?

As an intern in drone mapping, you'll typically support a variety of projects such as surveying land, creating topographic maps, and processing aerial imagery. Your daily responsibilities may include assisting with drone flight planning, collecting and analyzing geospatial data, and using mapping software to generate models or reports. You may also collaborate closely with experienced drone pilots, GIS analysts, and engineers, gaining hands-on experience in both fieldwork and data processing. This role provides an excellent opportunity to learn industry-standard technologies and workflows, setting a solid foundation for a career in geospatial sciences or unmanned aerial systems.

  • Serve as Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC) for mosquito surveillance and larvicide/adulticide applications.
  • Conduct pre-flight inspections, airspace coordination, safety briefings, and ensure FAA compliance.
  • Execute missions using RGB, thermal, LiDAR, photogrammetry, and mapping sensors.
  • Perform drone-based topographic surveys and volumetric analyses.
  • Maintain accurate post-flight records, maintenance logs, and mission reports.
  • Support aerial operations scheduling and coordination with the operations team.
  • Process and validate field-collected geospatial data.
  • Monitor accuracy of GIS and remote sensing data (QGIS, ESRI).
  • Implement quality control measures for survey and application data.
  • Reconcile GIS and field data with chemical usage and calibration records.
  • Ensure timely treatment intervals and accurate chemical usage reporting.
  • Monitor and maintain chemical inventory and equipment calibration.
  • Work independently or with seasonal teams in varied outdoor environments (heavy vegetation, uneven terrain, wildlife and sun exposure, etc.).

Minimum Requirements:
    • Ability to work (1st/day shift Monday - Friday) approximately 2 weeks/month from April - November
    • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
    • FAA 3rd Class Medical Certificate (ability to take and pass within 30 days of hire).
    • Florida Public Health Applicator's License (ability to take and pass exam within 60 days of hire).
      • Please note that some state licenses and some contracts do require a criminal background check
    • Florida Aerial Applicator's License (ability to obtain within 60 days of hire).
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, Geomatics, Biology, or a related field.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of UAV experience and familiarity with FAA regulations.
  • Experience in mosquito control, pest control, or aquatics industries.
  • Knowledge of GIS platforms (QGIS, ESRI), remote sensing, drone mapping software.
