What is an internship in downstream process development?

An Internship in Downstream Process Development is a temporary position, typically for students or recent graduates, focused on learning and supporting the processes involved in purifying and formulating biopharmaceutical products after the initial production stage. Interns in this field gain hands-on experience with techniques such as filtration, chromatography, and quality control, and often work within a research and development or manufacturing environment. This internship helps build skills in laboratory methods, data analysis, and process optimization, making it valuable for those interested in careers in biotechnology or pharmaceuticals.

What types of hands-on projects can I expect to work on during an internship in downstream process development?

As an intern in Downstream Process Development, you will typically assist with projects focused on purification and recovery of biological products, such as proteins or antibodies, from complex mixtures. This often includes tasks like preparing chromatography columns, performing filtration techniques, and conducting sample analysis using methods such as SDS-PAGE or HPLC. You’ll also collaborate closely with experienced scientists and engineers, participate in team meetings to review data, and help troubleshoot process challenges. These experiences provide valuable insight into both laboratory workflows and the broader bioprocess development pipeline.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in downstream process development, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Internship Downstream Process Development role, a solid background in biotechnology, chemical engineering, or a related field, along with foundational lab skills, is essential. Familiarity with bioprocessing techniques, analytical instruments, and data analysis software is typically required, and experience with GMP environments can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with team members and documenting results. These competencies ensure interns can contribute to optimizing purification processes and maintaining high standards in biopharmaceutical development.

What is the difference between Internship Downstream Process Development vs Downstream Process Technician?

Full-time

Re-posted 5 days ago

Job description

Modernizing its procurement capabilities through eMMA (Ivalua) and requires secure, reliable, and auditable integrations to enable end-to-end procurement processes, including downstream procure-to-pay. The Boomi Integration Developer will support the integration layer that connects Ivalua/eMMA with State financial and related downstream/legacy systems, ensuring data integrity, traceability, and operational readiness across Dev / Test-UAT / Prod environments.
Role Summary
This role designs, builds, tests, deploys, and supports integrations on the Boomi platform for the eMMA (Ivalua) ecosystem. The developer will work within a CI/CD delivery model, build and consume APIs, implement robust error handling and reconciliation patterns, and support release and production operations in collaboration with architects, functional leads, and State stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain Boomi integrations supporting Ivalua/eMMA business flows, including (as applicable):
    • Supplier/Vendor and reference/master data synchronization
    • Catalog/Items/Services interfaces
    • Purchase Requisitions / Purchase Orders creation, updates, and status events
    • Receipts, Invoices, and related downstream processing events
    • Payment status and financial posting/extract interfaces where applicable
  • Develop and support REST and SOAP APIs (API-led integrations), including mapping, transformations, and validations using XML/JSON.
  • Implement integration controls to support auditability and operational stability, including:
    • Standardized error handling, retry logic, and exception queues
    • Logging, monitoring hooks, and traceability identifiers across systems
    • Data validation rules to prevent downstream reconciliation issues
  • Participate in CI/CD activities for Boomi deployments, including source control alignment, packaging, promotion, and release support across environments.
  • Execute unit, system, and integration testing; support UAT coordination and production validation activities.
  • Troubleshoot integration failures, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Produce and maintain integration documentation (interface specs, mappings, runbooks, and operational procedures).
  • Collaborate with technical and business stakeholders (integration architects, functional teams, external system owners) to translate requirements into cohesive integration solutions.
Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years of hands-on development experience in Boomi (AtomSphere).
  • Demonstrated experience with REST/SOAP, XML/JSON, and integration mapping/transformation.
  • Working knowledge of integration patterns (orchestration, validation, error handling, retries, logging/monitoring).
  • Experience working within a CI/CD framework (e.g., Git-based version control, automated deployments, release pipelines).
  • Understanding of API security fundamentals (authentication/authorization concepts, secure transport, least privilege).
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior integration experience with Ivalua or procurement/procure-to-pay platforms (supplier, requisition, PO, invoice, payment flows).
  • Experience integrating with financial/ERP systems and supporting reconciliation/audit traceability needs.
  • Boomi certification (Developer or equivalent) and familiarity with Boomi deployment management and runtime concepts.
Work Environment
  • Work supports three environments (Dev / Test-UAT / Prod) and may require participation in scheduled releases and occasional after-hours deployment support as needed.
