What is an internship in downstream process development?

An Internship in Downstream Process Development is a temporary position, typically for students or recent graduates, focused on learning and supporting the processes involved in purifying and formulating biopharmaceutical products after the initial production stage. Interns in this field gain hands-on experience with techniques such as filtration, chromatography, and quality control, and often work within a research and development or manufacturing environment. This internship helps build skills in laboratory methods, data analysis, and process optimization, making it valuable for those interested in careers in biotechnology or pharmaceuticals.

What types of hands-on projects can I expect to work on during an internship in downstream process development?

As an intern in Downstream Process Development, you will typically assist with projects focused on purification and recovery of biological products, such as proteins or antibodies, from complex mixtures. This often includes tasks like preparing chromatography columns, performing filtration techniques, and conducting sample analysis using methods such as SDS-PAGE or HPLC. You’ll also collaborate closely with experienced scientists and engineers, participate in team meetings to review data, and help troubleshoot process challenges. These experiences provide valuable insight into both laboratory workflows and the broader bioprocess development pipeline.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in downstream process development, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Internship Downstream Process Development role, a solid background in biotechnology, chemical engineering, or a related field, along with foundational lab skills, is essential. Familiarity with bioprocessing techniques, analytical instruments, and data analysis software is typically required, and experience with GMP environments can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with team members and documenting results. These competencies ensure interns can contribute to optimizing purification processes and maintaining high standards in biopharmaceutical development.

HUB LOCATIONS:  Dunwoody, GA; Richardson, TX; Tempe, AZ; or Bloomington, IL

Responsibilities

We're looking for a forward-thinking General Ledger Technology Analyst to join our ERP/General Ledger technology team. This is not a software development role. We are looking for someone with deep finance and accounting experience who understands how enterprise technology works — not someone who builds it. The ideal candidate brings a strong business and accounting perspective, can translate complex financial processes into clear technology requirements, and thrives in a collaborative, agile environment. You'll be heavily involved in the configuration, testing, and implementation of Oracle Fusion ERP, EPM, and EDM products, working alongside engineers and business partners to deliver solutions that matter.

What You'll Do
• Support General Ledger operations end-to-end — from processing data sent by upstream systems to month-end/year-end close, to downstream reporting and analytics
• Define, analyze, and translate detailed business requirements into technology solutions, partnering closely with engineers, business partners, and product teams
• Contribute to large, multi-department implementations using agile techniques including sprints, backlog grooming, and iterative development
• Manage external system integrations (inbound and outbound feeds), resolve production issues, and support business partners in understanding system capabilities
• Develop test cases, perform user acceptance testing, and validate solutions — engaging in test automation where appropriate
• Support expense allocation processes alongside core General Ledger work
• Coordinate the development and maintenance of accounting operating procedures and training materials
• Identify, manage, and help implement solutions to address risks, issues, defects, and process improvement opportunities across business and technology teams
• Provide analytics and insights in response to business questions, leveraging data tools and emerging technologies including AI
• Mentor teammates, share knowledge generously, and help the team grow collectively

You'll be part of a team that takes real pride in what they do — in the depth of their knowledge, the quality of their work, and the way they support one another. This is a place where your initiative will be noticed, your expertise will matter, and your growth will be supported.

Qualifications

• Three plus years of experience in financial reporting or General Ledger processing within a large organization (5,000+ employees)
• A solid understanding of how enterprise financial systems work — including data flow, balancing, and period-end close — from a business and accounting perspective
• Hands-on experience with Oracle Fusion ERP, or a demonstrated transition from PeopleSoft to a cloud-based ERP solution; EPM and EDM experience is a plus
• Strong working knowledge of Excel; experience with SQL, SAS Enterprise Guide, or similar query tools is ideal
• Familiarity with agile methodologies and tools such as Jira or Agility
• Experience with or curiosity about AI tools — including agentic AI and tools like ChatGPT — for data automation, balancing, or validation
• AWS services experience will be useful
• Someone who takes initiative, coordinates across teams, and doesn't leave colleagues behind
• A clear, confident communicator who speaks up, shares a point of view, and genuinely listens
• A relationship builder who earns trust through follow-through, expertise, and care
• Attention to detail and a growth mindset — you stay curious and keep learning

Because work-life balance is a priority at State Farm, compensation is based on our standard 38:45-hour work week!
