We are seeking a Teaching Assistant (Juvenile Correctional Facility) to join our team. This role will involve supporting classroom instruction, supervising students in the absence of the classroom teacher, and maintaining a structured, positive learning environment within a juvenile correctional facility. The ideal candidate will have experience working in educational or youth-focused settings and a passion for supporting student growth, development, and rehabilitation through education.

Job Description

The Teaching Assistant serves in the Education Department of a juvenile correctional facility and is responsible for supervising students in the classroom during the absence of the classroom teacher. This role supports instructional delivery, classroom management, and student engagement while ensuring compliance with institutional policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Supervising students and maintaining classroom order in the absence of the teacher
  • Taking attendance and monitoring student behavior and assignments
  • Providing guidance and instructional support to students on assignments left by the classroom teacher
  • Maintaining accurate daily records and written reports in compliance with departmental policies
  • Implementing daily and weekly lesson plans to support full course objectives when required
  • Promoting a positive, structured, and supportive learning environment
  • Collaborating with school staff and other departments to enhance student learning outcomes
  • Participating in faculty meetings, professional development, and multidisciplinary treatment teams
  • Following all policies related to safety, confidentiality, and critical incident response
  • Successfully completing all required training, certifications, and drug screenings
  • Maintaining a professional and positive working relationship with students, staff, contractors, interns, volunteers, and community partners

The Teaching Assistant reports directly to the School Principal and performs duties with minimal supervision.

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage and supervise students effectively
  • Ability to implement lesson plans and support classroom instruction
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to accept supervision and constructive feedback
  • Ability to pass all required background checks, drug tests, and training requirements
Preferred Qualifications
  • Substitute Teaching Permit
  • Prior experience working with students in an educational or youth-focused setting
